According to <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/news\/mary-beth-hurt-dead-world-according-to-garp-1236702265\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Variety<\/a>, the cause of death was complications from Alzheimer\u2019s. Her daughter Molly and husband <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/paul-schrader-thought-he-was-dying-so-he-made-oh-canada.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Schrader<\/a> announced her death in a joint social media statement. \u201cShe was an actress, a wife, a sister, a mother, an aunt, a friend, and she took on all those roles with grace and kind ferocity,\u201d it reads. \u201cAlthough we\u2019re all grieving there is some comfort in knowing she is no longer suffering and reunited with her sisters in peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmnch4o2e00133b7cknpm3sd4@published\" data-word-count=\"45\">Born Mary Beth Supinger in 1946, Hurt got her professional surname after marrying William Hurt in 1971. Her childhood babysitter was fellow Iowan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/why-jean-luc-godards-breathless-still-strikes-a-nerve.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jean Seberg<\/a>. She studied drama at the University of Iowa, then at Tisch. The following year, she was nominated for a Tony.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmnch4o5j00143b7c3t2y69mj@published\" data-word-count=\"75\">Hurt made her New York stage debut in 1974. Her on-screen debut was in Interiors as Joey, the middle sister between Diane Keaton and Kristin Griffith. She followed that with The World According to Garp in 1982. Other major film roles for Hurt included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2021\/01\/the-exquisite-violence-of-scorseses-the-age-of-innocence.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Age of Innocence<\/a>, Six Degrees of Separation, Bringing Out the Dead, Lady in the Water, Young Adult, and The Dead Girl, for which she received an Independent Spirit Award nomination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmnch4o8r00153b7chgydtq48@published\" data-word-count=\"112\">Hurt turned down a lot of the film roles offered to her. \u201cFifty percent of the roles I\u2019m offered in films are nothing,\u201d she told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1989\/11\/02\/theater\/mary-beth-hurt-s-juggling-act.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times<\/a> in 1989. \u201cI don\u2019t mean size-wise. There\u2019s nothing of any interest in them. So I do the ones that are interesting, unless I haven\u2019t done one in a long while. Then I\u2019ll do one that isn\u2019t interesting.\u201d Instead, she kept her hand in the theatrical world. Hurt was nominated for three Tony\u2019s in her lifetime: for Trelawny of the \u2018Wells\u2019 in 1975, Crimes of the Heart in 1981 (for which she won an Obie and a Drama Desk award), and Benefactors in 1985.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmnch4obv00163b7ctpus27f9@published\" data-word-count=\"30\">Mary Beth Hurt divorced William in 1981. In 1982, she married filmmaker Paul Schrader. The two had a daughter and son.
