Bad news: They\u2019re also betting the economic damage from the war could last for years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmndh2m4p0005356q9ag9swgl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Crude has surged above $110 a barrel, making $4-a-gallon gas and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/28\/business\/diesel-trucking-iran-war\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$5.40 diesel a painful reality<\/a> in the United States.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmndhdbiy000c356qkus1wa1a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But when we say \u201ccrude is trading above $110 a barrel,\u201d that\u2019s not the full story: Oil trades on a market where investors buy barrels of oil to be delivered sometime in the future \u2013 months or even years later. Right now, oil for April delivery is at $110, but the further out the oil is set for delivery, the cheaper it gets.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmndhjwtd000i356q3gio38kw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s atypical; usually oil gets more expensive the further out it\u2019s to be delivered. And that tells us something important: Markets expect a sharp decline in crude prices over the next few months, but oil won\u2019t return to its pre-war level for years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmndhxjfc000p356qpcr1q2py@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In other words, even if the war ends tomorrow, the fallout  will be with us for some time. Get used to high energy prices.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmndheznr000e356qwz6o8kku@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At present, oil for May delivery is trading just below $110. Oil for June is at $100. You get into the $80s by August and back into the high $70s by March 2027. Oil is expected to return to $70 a barrel in 2031.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmndjtp5s0027356qq1eskrbm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That doesn\u2019t mean that\u2019s exactly what oil will cost; it\u2019s a bet oil traders are making about the future. But it\u2019s an indication that no one thinks the pre-war \u201cnormal\u201d is achievable anytime soon.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmndjjb33001p356qylwote4h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThat\u2019s more problematic for the economy that you might think,\u201d said Rob Haworth, senior investment strategy director at US Bank. \u201cThat\u2019s going to be a real burden for the consumer.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmndjpfxa001y356qmjyvji11@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Oil can\u2019t just go back down below $70 for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/24\/business\/gas-prices-taco-trump-iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">number of reasons<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmndi4a47000r356qay11dukh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/19\/business\/strait-of-hormuz-open-trump-iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The closed Strait of Hormuz<\/a> left nowhere for the region\u2019s producers to put their oil, so many were forced to shut down production. If the strait were to reopen, production could take weeks to come back online \u2013 it\u2019s not like turning on a light switch.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmndgdtep0002356qaykyr61b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s assuming facilities even work at all: Iran and Israel have inflicted significant damage to liquefied natural gas facilities and oil refineries in the Middle East. Qatar said its Ras Laffan liquefied natural gas port \u2014 the world\u2019s largest \u2014 would take years to fully come back online.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmndi4inj000t356qqb0hn1s2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s why it will probably be three to four months after hostilities end in the Middle East before oil and gas production approaches anything close to pre-war production levels.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmndjx27e002d356qch13r6d2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of oil in the world; right now it\u2019s just locked up,\u201d said Rob Thummel, senior portfolio manager at Tortoise Capital.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmndjqdkw0023356q92fk0ire@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            High gas prices represent a real burden for Americans. But it could get a whole lot worse.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmndiycbn001b356qzhpnq80b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Macquarie Research analysts on Monday predicted that a war lasting through June could push oil to hit $200 a barrel, which could correlate to gas prices at around $7 a gallon. That\u2019s not their base case \u2013 but it\u2019s within the realm of possibility.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/gettyimages-2267020544.jpg\" alt=\"Drivers wait to refuel vehicles at a Costco gas station in Richmond, California.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1066\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmndj7wq7001h356q9yz6kag1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At that level, many Americans simply won\u2019t be able to afford to live their lives without making significant changes. Some won\u2019t be able to get to work. Others won\u2019t be able to afford to eat. Some will have to give up their homes. And businesses, many of which have paused hiring, may need to lay people off.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmndjbozr001m356qjnmz70v4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But oil wouldn\u2019t need to get to $200 a barrel by June to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/30\/economy\/recession-economy-timing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tip the US economy into a recession<\/a>. Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, believes one more month of triple-digit oil prices could be enough. Joe Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM US, said US oil would need to rise to $125 a barrel \u2013 about $25 higher than it is today \u2013 to sink the economy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmndizedy001d356qmuhywh3p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The longer the war lasts, the longer this biggest-ever global oil supply shock lasts.
