Despite being the only daughter of Queen Elizabeth and only sister of King Charles, however, she has only worn five tiaras publicly during her lifetime. As a well-known outfit repeater, it’s not surprising that she’s stuck to the same jewels over the decades. And yes it snapped the morning of (it was originally meant to be a necklace after all) but the crisis was averted and the monarchy carried on, as did this royal marriage. The Queen’s daughter Princess Anne also chose to wear it to her own wedding—a clear and direct line to the official love of her own parents. It was given to the Princess Royal in 1973 by the World Wide Shipping Group. The antique tiara’s origins are unknown, but it has remained in Princess Anne’s personal collection and she’s turned to it throughout the years.

4. In 1948, King George VI gave his wife Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother) the tiara, which features aquamarines, and she wore it twice publicly. Upon her granddaughter Princess Anne’s wedding, the Queen Mother gave it to her, and Anne has worn it throughout the years.

In the 90s, Anne remodeled the tiara, removing the central gem to turn it into a brooch. She also removed two aquamarines; one became a pendant, which Anne wears on a string of pearls—and the other became the new center of the tiara. Notably, the Cartier Aquamarine Pineflower Tiara went on display in the Cartier Exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London in 2025.

5. King George VI (then the Duke of York) purchased the tiara, made by Cartier, in 1936 as a gift for his wife. In 1944, Queen Elizabeth gave the tiara to her daughter, then-Princess Elizabeth, for her 18th birthday. The soon-to-be Queen Elizabeth II never wore the tiara in public, instead loaning it to Princess Margaret, who notably wore it at Queen Elizabeth’s 1953 coronation. In 1967, Princess Anne stepped out in the tiara for the first time, but after her wedding six years later, she never wore it publicly again.

Emily Burack (she/her) is the Deputy Digital Editor for Town & Country, where she covers entertainment, celebrities, the royals, and a wide range of other topics.
