Opinion: Martin LeFevre – Meditations<\/a><\/p>\n

The multiverse is one of the most pernicious scientific
\ndeceptions ever perpetrated. It\u2019s an idea without evidence
\nmotivated by a belief in a totally random, materialistic and
\nmechanistic universe.<\/p>\n

The multiverse concept is a
\ncunning way of getting around our finely tuned universe by
\nimagining an infinite number of universes, and maintaining
\nthat we just happen to live in the one where the laws of
\nphysics, chemistry and biology are such that they permit
\ncomplex life.<\/p>\n

As a worldview and belief system, the
\nmultiverse surpasses the necessity of refuting the belief in
\na separate \u201cCreator\u201d of the universe, or \u201cDesigner\u201d
\nin intelligent design. It\u2019s a devious assertion of pure
\nchance, an insistence that there is only matter, and a claim
\nthat everything in the universe boils down to the
\ninteraction of the parts of a complex machine.<\/p>\n

The
\nuniverse is considered \u201cfinely tuned\u201d because \u201cthe
\nfundamental physical constants and conditions are precisely
\ncalibrated to values that permit the existence of stars,
\nplanets, complex chemistry, and life as we know it.\u201d If
\nany of these basic constants and conditions were even
\nslightly different, life would be impossible. For example,
\nstars may not form and the elements essential for life would
\nnot be produced.<\/p>\n

Scientists haven\u2019t been able to
\naccount for how and why these constants and conditions of
\nthe universe exist. The fact that they do points to an
\nultimately creative, non-mechanistic universe.<\/p>\n

That
\ndoesn\u2019t mean there is a separate God that set the universe
\nin motion, but it does mean there is an intrinsic
\nintelligence and order beyond chance and mechanism.<\/p>\n

It
\ndoesn\u2019t mean there are supernatural causes, forms or
\nqualities, but it does mean that there is something
\nunknowable and ineffable beyond the realm of knowledge,
\nhowever far it extends.<\/p>\n

That possibility is deeply
\nunsettling to dogmatic materialists, and so someone came up
\nwith the clever dodge of an infinite number of universes —
\nthe multiverse — of which ours just happens to be the one
\nconducive to star formation and life.<\/p>\n

Of course the
\nchances of that occurring through pure chance is so small as
\nto make the idea of the multiverse ridiculous.<\/p>\n

There
\nis another unspoken driver of the multiverse idea, and
\nit\u2019s the projection of the disorder, destructiveness and
\nmeaninglessness of man, and the world humans have made, onto
\nnature and the universe. Unable or unwilling to look at
\nthemselves and ask the right questions, most philosophers
\nand scientists keep asserting the wrong answers.<\/p>\n

This
\npertains to the question of our significance and\/or
\ninsignificance in the universe.<\/p>\n

A friend sent me a
\ncore quote from the movie, \u201cEverything, everywhere all at
\nonce\u201d: \u201cWe\u2019re all small and stupid.\u201d<\/p>\n

The quote
\nand passage makes reference to the multiverse, and is \u201ca
\nreminder how insignificant we are in the grand scheme of
\nthings\u2026a moment in the passing of time\u2026and how little we
\nknow.\u201d<\/p>\n

Does the perpetual incompleteness of
\nknowledge mean that we have to remain small and
\nstupid?<\/p>\n

The multiverse and \u201cspecks on a speck in
\nspace\u201d ideas produce a false humility, and the notion that
\nwe\u2019re innately \u201csmall and stupid.\u201d<\/p>\n

Our personal
\nlives are insignificant to be sure, but we can awaken and
\ngrow into beings of insight rather than shrinking captives
\nof knowledge. In other words, we can be excellent human
\nbeings rather than small and petty humans.<\/p>\n

Also,
\nthough our individual lives may seem to be \u201ca moment in
\nthe passing of time,\u201d we don\u2019t have to be slaves to
\ntime, but have the capacity to experience, even dwell in
\ntimelessness.<\/p>\n

Besides, there is no time in the
\nuniverse, only the ongoing unfolding of creation.
\nPsychological time is a false and ultimately suffocating
\nthing. To understand and end it, we have to end busyness,
\nand question, understand and end the movement of thought.
\nFor thought is time, and time is thought.<\/p>\n

As separate,
\nconditioned and time-bound humans we are utterly
\ninsignificant, but as whole human beings we are significant
\nto the degree we embody humanity as a whole.<\/p>\n

Even more
\nto the point, the human brain is cosmically significant
\nbecause only this brain on this planet has the capacity for
\ncommunion with the immanent cosmic Mind.<\/p>\n

The great
\nparadox is that the evolution of the adaptation that put the
\nhuman brain over the threshold for this spiritual capacity
\n\u2013 conscious, symbolic thought \u2013 has become the greatest
\nimpediment to the realization of our spiritual
\npotential.<\/p>\n

Despite all the knowledge we have
\naccumulated, humans have become even more petty and
\ninsignificant because we haven\u2019t awakened insight and
\nunderstanding. Indeed, our use of the intellect has made us
\nthe most destructive force that ever evolved on
\nEarth.<\/p>\n

Awareness is the fire of life, synonymous with
\nthe inseparable source from which life has its wellspring.
\nAwareness preceded the formation of the Earth and the
\nevolution of the brain, and it is to awareness that the
\nattentive and silent brain returns in life, and in
\ndeath.<\/p>\n

As the crisis of human consciousness increases
\nand intensifies, can the immeasurable energy of the universe
\nbe within us, to the extent of our capacity?<\/p>\n

It can
\nand must. For when the silent brain is suffused with the
\nawareness that infuses the universe, attention burns away
\nthe cumulative dark matter that is destroying the Earth and
\nthe human being.<\/p>\n
