(Source: Local Democracy Reporting)<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">&#8220;He united people across all the ethnic divides\u2026 he loved that we were a multicultural society in Manukau.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Filipaina said his relationship with Sir Barry goes back decades. He first met him while working as a police officer in 1978 before later serving together on the council.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">&#8220;My history with Sir Barry goes back many years\u2026I came to know him even more closely when I was elected to the Manukau City Council in 2003,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">&#8220;One of the first jobs he gave me in 2004 was the chair of the Transport Committee. That man meant so much to me. (Source: Local Democracy Reporting)<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">&#8220;He always spoke about respecting M\u0101ori, mana whenua, iwi\u2026 Te Tiriti o Waitangi needed to be respected,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Filipaina said Sir Barry was widely respected within Pacific communities, where he was honoured with a S\u0101moan matai title.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">&#8220;Obviously, our Pacific community really loved him\u2026 that\u2019s where he got the Samoan title,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Sir Barry was knighted in 1992 for his services to local government and awarded the S\u0101moan chiefly title, Seiuli, in 1994 by His Highness Malietoa Tanumafili II, recognising his contributions to Manukau\u2019s S\u0101moan and Pacific communities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">He served eight consecutive terms as mayor from 1983 to 2007, becoming the country\u2019s longest-serving mayor at the time of his retirement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">During that time, he oversaw the development across Manukau including libraries, leisure centres, parks, and long-term urban planning that helped shape the region\u2019s growth.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/barry-curtis-park-in-flat-bush-a-major-public-space-in-south-MBJCWNFFW5BEVLQBWM7KISDWRM.jpg\" alt=\" Barry Curtis Park in Flat Bush, a major public space in South Auckland named after former Manukau City mayor Sir Barry Curtis.\" width=\"800\" height=\"449\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"ImageMetadata__MetadataParagraph-sc-hi5x8q-0 cWTYyG image-metadata\"> Barry Curtis Park in Flat Bush, a major public space in South Auckland named after former Manukau City mayor Sir Barry Curtis. (Source: Local Democracy Reporting)<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Barry Curtis Park in Flat Bush, now Auckland\u2019s largest urban park developed in over a century, stands as one of the most visible examples of his legacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Filipaina said Sir Barry also played a key role in the early vision for what is now the Due Drop Event Centre. &#8220;He brought Manukau City Council and our community together,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown said Sir Barry helped lay the foundation of what became Manukau city \u201cand his impact is visible with the growth that followed in Manukau, community facilities and parks\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Phil Wilson, Auckland Council Chief Executive, said his leadership created lasting opportunities for future generations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">&#8220;His leadership fostered a sense of belonging and pride across generations, with a particular focus on creating pathways and opportunities for young people to thrive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">&#8220;I will particularly remember him for his very astute political leadership; his acerbic wit; and his very deep commitment to Manukau and its diverse communities,&#8221; Wilson said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/an-aerial-view-of-manukau-where-sir-barry-curtis-served-as-m-IGYDL64PVJFY3HBNKLBY56VIDI.png\" alt=\"An aerial view of Manukau, where Sir Barry Curtis served as mayor from 1983 to 2007.\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"ImageMetadata__MetadataParagraph-sc-hi5x8q-0 cWTYyG image-metadata\">An aerial view of Manukau, where Sir Barry Curtis served as mayor from 1983 to 2007. (Source: Local Democracy Reporting)<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Apulu Reece Autagavaia, an elected member of the \u014ctara-Papatoetoe Local Board and former chair, said the impact of Sir Barry&#8217;s work is still felt across South Auckland today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">&#8220;As Mayor of the former Manukau City Council for many terms, he laid the foundations for what many South Auckland Local Boards benefit from today\u2026 it is the groundwork that he has laid on which we continue to build on, a future for our people here in South Auckland, the heart of the Super City.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Filipaina said Sir Barry&#8217;s approach to leadership, often called the &#8220;Manukau Way&#8221;, focused on balancing growth with community wellbeing and building partnerships across cultures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Asked what younger generations should take from his legacy, Filipaina pointed to one key message: &#8220;For our rangatahi\u2026 to do things for our community, you need to unite them.
