A man was arrested in Auckland overnight after he allegedly drove on the wrong side of the motorway, hitting speeds upwards of 160km\/h before crashing. <\/p>\n
At around 3.15am, police received “multiple reports” of a vehicle travelling the wrong way on the northern motorway near Northcote. <\/p>\n
Motorway cameras captured footage of the vehicle driving at “high speeds” near Oteha Valley Road, Albany.<\/p>\n
\u201cPolice units were deployed to the area, but with the vehicle reaching speeds upwards of 160kmh, officers did not pursue,” Senior Sergeant Carl Fowlie said. <\/p>\n
\u201cUnits followed the vehicle at a safe distance from the correct side of the motorway.” <\/p>\n
The vehicle continued travelling north, all while in the southbound lane of State Highway 1. <\/p>\n
It eventually stopped after hitting a barrier near the Puhoi on-ramp, sending it crashing down a bank. <\/p>\n
When officers arrived at the scene, they found the driver uninjured and took him into custody.<\/p>\n
A 53-year-old man was summonsed to appear in the North Shore District court on May 13 for recklessly operating a motor vehicle. <\/p>\n
