Photo \/ Phil Thomsen<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Mitchell-Anyon said efforts should not be reduced because of vandalism fears.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">He said Rangiora St, which intersects with Cornfoot St and has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/the-country\/news\/whanganuis-rangiora-street-makeover-how-succulents-transformed-a-suburb\/JOSYVTMVEVGULLYVM3WEBYKTZA\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/the-country\/news\/whanganuis-rangiora-street-makeover-how-succulents-transformed-a-suburb\/JOSYVTMVEVGULLYVM3WEBYKTZA\/\">planted with aloes and palms<\/a>, had not been vandalised because it was community-led.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIf you involve the community, they\u2019ll be more interested.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAlso, it\u2019s just beautiful, because it was done by a real gardener. People love it so they don\u2019t vandalise it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">He said other replacement options for the griselinias were oleanders or dracaenas (dragon tree). <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">The project required \u201ca bit of buy-in\u201d from the council.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cStreet trees are very low-maintenance but, for the first part of their lives, they need help,\u201d Mitchell-Anyon said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cYou\u2019ve got to water it through summer, you\u2019ve got to feed it a little bit and mulch it to retain moisture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAfter that, you can pretty much walk away and reap the rewards for years and years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Mike Tweed is a multimedia journalist at the Whanganui Chronicle.
