{"id":359127,"date":"2026-04-01T20:37:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-01T20:37:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/359127\/"},"modified":"2026-04-01T20:37:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T20:37:09","slug":"waikato-mum-with-leukaemia-in-remission-fears-relapse-amid-long-stem-cell-delay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/359127\/","title":{"rendered":"Waikato mum with leukaemia in remission fears relapse amid long stem cell delay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI was a busy working mum with two kids, normally with one attached to me at some point &#8230; [I] never took them [the symptoms] too seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Loran Geddes was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in November, 2025. \" class=\"article-media__image responsively-lazy\" data-test-ui=\"article-media__image\"\/>Loran Geddes was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in November, 2025. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">When she also noticed chest pains in November last year, she decided to see her GP in the Taup\u014d area and had some tests done.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">About four hours later, her life turned upside down. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">She was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), an aggressive cancer of the blood and bone marrow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201c[The doctor] said, we\u2019re 99% sure it\u2019s leukaemia, and Waikato Hospital is waiting for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Within 24 hours of diagnosis, Geddes arrived at the hospital and began high\u2011dose chemotherapy four days later. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Doctors found mutations that put her in a \u201chigh-risk\u201d category, and she was told she urgently required an allogeneic stem cell transplant (bone marrow). <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">She was placed on the Auckland waitlist with an expected wait time of six months, but delays in accessing the transplant have increased that to nine months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Her transplant has been moved from May to August. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Geddes was deemed \u201cmedically ready\u201d for a transplant after her second round of chemo in January, but has  begun a fourth cycle while waiting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">She is currently in remission.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Loran Geddes awaits treatment for blood cancer, but faces a nine-month delay for a stem cell transplant. \" class=\"article-media__image responsively-lazy\" data-test-ui=\"article-media__image\"\/>Loran Geddes awaits treatment for blood cancer, but faces a nine-month delay for a stem cell transplant. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">But the pushback means a high chance of relapsing, with her \u201criskiest period being the first three months of remission\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI have to be in remission to go for the transplant,\u201d Geddes said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIf I were to relapse and we couldn\u2019t get me back into remission before August, then I would need to be pushed back on the wait list, again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">The delay is \u201cconcerning\u201d for her, especially for her kids.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI\u2019ve got a young family &#8230; they need me at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">She said while Wilson doesn\u2019t understand much of what\u2019s going on, Harry does.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHe\u2019s well aware that mummy goes to the hospital to get better, and mummy disappears for a couple of weeks at a time, and she might come home and then go away again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Her husband has left work to be her  fulltime carer and help take care of the kids. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201c[The diagnosis has] also taken him by surprise. [It] changed his life a lot,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">To help with the financial strain and to explore overseas transplant options, a friend set up a <a href=\"https:\/\/givealittle.co.nz\/cause\/support-lorans-fight-against-leukaemia-a-young-mum\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/givealittle.co.nz\/cause\/support-lorans-fight-against-leukaemia-a-young-mum\">Givealittle<\/a> page.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Her wait is unfolding despite recent Government funding aimed at decreasing transplant delays nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Government funding<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Last year, the Government announced a $27.1 million investment in stem cell transplant services to help patients \u201caccess life-saving treatments without delay\u201d, the release said at the time. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">The funding, across three years, would \u201cstrengthen the workforce, expand hospital capacity, and upgrade infrastructure\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">This included employing 79 new  fulltime staff. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Auckland and Wellington Hospitals would increase inpatient bed space, with eight new beds focused on Auckland\u2019s oncology\/haematology patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Health New Zealand clinical executive national director Richard Sullivan said an initial $6.11 million annual boost was implemented last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">The investment allowed for 21 new  fulltime staff to be employed in Christchurch and 26 in Auckland,  and around five more expected in May.<\/p>\n<p>Transplant woes<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Sullivan said last year, 125 allogeneic transplants (using a donor) were completed. This was up from 114 in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">In 2027 and 2028, the Government\u2019s investment aimed to increase the number of allogeneic transplants to 160.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Meanwhile, Geddes is still awaiting a transplant, which she describes as the \u201cdifference between life and death\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Sullivan said only Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington hospitals were currently equipped to deliver allogeneic transplants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Waikato and Palmerston North hospitals could perform transplants using a patient\u2019s own stem cells. <\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Health New Zealand clinical executive national director Dr Richard Sullivan. Photo \/ RNZ, Calvin Samuel<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">While Geddes believed the Government\u2019s investment was positive, she said it would only help patients in the long term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThey have no solutions for people like me,\u201d  she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt\u2019s a case of, \u2018We\u2019ve received funding and our plans are to improve wait times\u2019, &#8230; but what are you going to do to help people like myself now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Since December, 110 patients nationwide are waiting for an allogeneic stem cell transplant &#8211; 69 of them, including Geddes, in Auckland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Sullivan said Geddes\u2019 treatment delay was the \u201cresult of nationwide capacity constraints for stem cell transplants\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWhile the new funding will reduce the waitlist over the longer term, we recognise this doesn\u2019t help Loran right now.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Sullivan said transplants were prioritised based on clinical need and length of time, although patients waiting the longest usually were treated first. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">He said Geddes was scheduled to get her transplant \u201cno later\u201d than mid-August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHowever, the Auckland team will continue to look for opportunities to bring this forward,\u201d Sullivan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">The Waikato Herald also approached Health Minister Simeon Brown for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">In response to questions, a spokesperson for the minister said  ensuring patients needing stem cell transplants can access this life-saving treatment was a \u201ckey priority\u201d for the minister.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Brown expected Health New Zealand to continue prioritising this work as part of the investment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Malisha Kumar is a multimedia journalist based in Hamilton.
