{"id":35955,"date":"2025-09-22T03:13:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-22T03:13:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/35955\/"},"modified":"2025-09-22T03:13:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-22T03:13:11","slug":"cost-of-living-crisis-almost-half-of-kiwis-going-backwards-financially","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/35955\/","title":{"rendered":"Cost-of-living crisis: Almost half of Kiwis going backwards financially"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"NzpREUNDumYW\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe data definitely shows a challenging environment for Kiwis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"NzpREUNDumYW\" style=\"display:none\">But Grange said women and the younger generation were feeling the pressure more acutely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NzpREUNDumYW\" style=\"display:none\">According to the survey of more than 1000 New Zealanders, 45% of women reported their financial situation had worsened compared with 39% of men.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NzpREUNDumYW\" style=\"display:none\">Among the age groups, 71% of respondents aged 25-34 and 63% of 18\u2013 to 24-year-olds reported facing significant financial management challenges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NzpREUNDumYW\" style=\"display:none\">Grange said that was a \u201csignificant concern\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NzpREUNDumYW\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe believe it\u2019s up to providers to also help guide [financial] education with their products and services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NzpREUNDumYW\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cKiwis have been left behind if we look at other countries and what their banks and financial services providers enable &#8230; there\u2019s many features available overseas that don\u2019t exist in New Zealand yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"NzpREUNDumYW\" style=\"display:none\">Grange said this includes tools around card management such as spending limits and protections from scams, as well as data tracking across different investment platforms.<\/p>\n<p>Spending power squeezed<\/p>\n<p class=\"NzpREUNDumYW\" style=\"display:none\">Last week, the Westpac-McDermott Miller Consumer Confidence Index showed economic confidence remained soggy, edging down 0.3 points to 90.9 in the September quarter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NzpREUNDumYW\" style=\"display:none\">Westpac senior economist Satish Ranchhod said factors such as increases in living costs and softness in the jobs market and house prices remain big concerns for many households.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NzpREUNDumYW\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHouseholds are still seeing their spending power squeezed by increases in the cost of food and other essentials,\u201d Ranchhod said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NzpREUNDumYW\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe number of households who expect to be better off financially this time next year has actually dropped back since our last survey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"NzpREUNDumYW\" style=\"display:none\">In the same week, New Zealand\u2019s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was revealed to have slammed into reversed in the June quarter, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/economy\/gdp\/nz-gdp-june-quarter-dropped-09-stats-nz\/NECXAUT2CBGPLEPSXL4SZSHRDU\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/economy\/gdp\/nz-gdp-june-quarter-dropped-09-stats-nz\/NECXAUT2CBGPLEPSXL4SZSHRDU\/\">contracting 0.9%<\/a> \u2013 deeper than economist forecasts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NzpREUNDumYW\" style=\"display:none\">Food prices have also continued to rise, increasing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/economy\/inflation\/food-prices-up-5-as-milk-cheese-and-butter-drive-august-year-2025-rise\/I7NGSCHTI5H5HL5MKIW5SX23NI\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/economy\/inflation\/food-prices-up-5-as-milk-cheese-and-butter-drive-august-year-2025-rise\/I7NGSCHTI5H5HL5MKIW5SX23NI\/\">5% in the 12 months to August<\/a>, according to Stats NZ. <\/p>\n<p class=\"NzpREUNDumYW\" style=\"display:none\">The challenges have been compounded by unemployment being on the up. Unemployment sits at 5.2% for the June quarter, compared with 4.7% at the same time last year.<\/p>\n<p>Story of adaptation<\/p>\n<p class=\"NzpREUNDumYW\" style=\"display:none\">Despite the current economic challenges, Grange said Revolut\u2019s survey also highlighted how Kiwis were adapting through shifts in managing their finances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NzpREUNDumYW\" style=\"display:none\">The survey found 41% of New Zealanders are diligently building an emergency fund. This was particularly strong among 25\u2013 to 34-year-olds (45%) and 35\u2013 to 49-year-olds (44%).<\/p>\n<p class=\"NzpREUNDumYW\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAmidst the challenges, I think the key message is Kiwis are proactively taking control of their finances and their aspirations are shifting a little,\u201d Grange said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NzpREUNDumYW\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cKiwis are working towards security through emergency funds, making deliberate spending choices, and maintaining their dreams of travel and financial independence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"NzpREUNDumYW\" style=\"display:none\">Cameron Smith is an Auckland-based business reporter.
