{"id":361224,"date":"2026-04-03T02:13:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-03T02:13:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/361224\/"},"modified":"2026-04-03T02:13:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T02:13:10","slug":"blues-star-retires-from-rugby-after-terminal-cancer-diagnosis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/361224\/","title":{"rendered":"Blues star retires from rugby after terminal cancer diagnosis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  [&amp;_p]:tit-sub-xl tit-sub-xl md:[&amp;_p]:d-tit-sub-xl md:d-tit-sub-xl mb-[1.3rem]\">Blues star Cameron Suafoa has announced his retirement from professional rugby following a terminal cancer diagnosis. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">In a video shared to Instagram, the 27-year-old forward shared the heartbreaking news that his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1news.co.nz\/2024\/05\/06\/it-was-tough-suafoa-on-returning-to-blues-after-cancer-treatment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">battle with high-grade sarcoma <\/a>had taken a turn for the worse. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve decided to finish playing rugby officially, and I&#8217;ve decided to retire,&#8221; Suafoa said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">&#8220;I was told the unfortunate news that my cancer had spread, and it was terminal now&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Suafoa said he would be starting chemotherapy within the coming days. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">&#8220;Unfortunately, I won&#8217;t be playing, but I&#8217;ll be going through a different type of battle soon.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Auckland-born Suafoa was diagnosed with sarcoma, an aggressive form of cancer which affects connective tissue in the back, in November 2023. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">He continued to train whilst undergoing radiation therapy, even playing two matches for the Blues just months after surgery, before being forced to take a break.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Suafoa returned to rugby in May 2024 after he was declared cancer-free, playing six matches with the Blues in their campaign that year, but received a second cancer diagnosis in 2025. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/cameron-suafoa-V4GXMY74NNHNVJ777U4FO6HMGY.jpg\" alt=\"Cameron Suafoa makes a break for the Blues against the Reds last season.\" width=\"800\" height=\"488\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"ImageMetadata__MetadataParagraph-sc-hi5x8q-0 cWTYyG image-metadata\">Cameron Suafoa makes a break for the Blues against the Reds last season. (Source: Photosport)<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">He played a total of 31 games with the Blues throughout his career, appearing in the M\u0101ori All Blacks squad in 2022 and having stints in NPC. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Reflecting on his professional rugby journey, Suafoa said it had been a &#8220;dream come true&#8221; to wear the Blues jersey. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">&#8220;This team definitely holds a special place in my heart,&#8221; he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve loved every minute of playing and just being in the environment, and just everything about this union and this club.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">He thanked everyone within the Blues for their support during his battle with cancer. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">&#8220;I\u2019ve appreciated everything like that, all the love everyone\u2019s shown.
