{"id":362954,"date":"2026-04-04T04:48:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-04T04:48:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/362954\/"},"modified":"2026-04-04T04:48:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-04T04:48:07","slug":"on-the-up-award-winning-oyster-burger-puts-paihias-tipsy-oyster-on-foodie-map","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/362954\/","title":{"rendered":"On The Up: Award-winning oyster burger puts Paihia\u2019s Tipsy Oyster on foodie map"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt was great for the team and good to showcase what we do,\u201d Dewan said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe\u2019ve won a few awards before so there were high expectations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThis one means a lot to us, because our oyster burger isn\u2019t just a dish, it\u2019s a story of where we come from and what we love.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Dewan and Gupta, who also own Bad Habits in Paihia and the Nauti Penguin in Russell with businessman Todd Ewers, established the Tipsy Oyster in 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Their seafood creation, called The Oyster Goes To..??, has \u201cbeen on the menu from day one\u201d, Dewan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">The burger comprises a fat tempura oyster, crispy onion bhaji, McClure\u2019s pickle and chipotle mayo, crab tartare mousse and ginger lime slaw. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Dewan said the burger\u2019s success lies in \u201csuper-fresh ingredients\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">The oysters, sourced straight from the sea, are clean, briny and full of character. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">The Tipsy Oyster\u2019s signature batter is made with Tuatara Hazy beer and a splash of Bad Habits award-winning gin, which helps the batter crisp up. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cFrom there, it\u2019s all about balance,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cMcClure\u2019s pickles bring the crunch and tang, tamarind chutney adds that sweet-sour zing, and our onion bhaji layers in warmth and spice. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThat\u2019s finished with confit garlic and brushed with butter on a soft bun.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Gupta said the oyster burger was \u201cthe crown jewel of the menu\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe\u2019re known for our fresh oysters. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt\u2019s all about harmony; you taste the ocean, the earth, and everything in between. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt\u2019s a must-try option.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"The Tipsy Oyster Tapas and Bar in Paihia won the seafood category for its unique burger in the Burger Nation competition.\" class=\"article-media__image responsively-lazy\" data-test-ui=\"article-media__image\"\/>The Tipsy Oyster Tapas and Bar in Paihia won the seafood category for its unique burger in the Burger Nation competition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Now in its third year, Burger Nation celebrates burger joints, food trucks, bars, cafes and restaurants nationwide from February 25 to March 29. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Diners scored burgers on taste, appearance and feels by scanning the QR code at each venue. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Smashie\u2019s, a food truck in Pukekohe, Auckland, won the supreme prize this year with its classic smashie double burger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Other category winners were:<\/p>\n<p>Best chicken burger: The Offering in Greytown.Best plant burger: Urbanaut\/Burgernaut in Auckland. Best meat burger: Smashies in Auckland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Burger Nation co-founder Becs Caughey said the competition was about more than finding the best burger. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cYes, we\u2019re on the hunt for New Zealand\u2019s best burger, but more importantly we\u2019re creating visibility, foot traffic and positivity for an industry that works incredibly hard and sits at the heart of our communities.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Each of the winners received a trophy, the glory of being the best at burgers in the country, a year\u2019s supply of McClure\u2019s Pickles, and a selection of sponsors\u2019 products. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sYHrSxRJWo\" style=\"display:none\">Jenny Ling is a senior journalist at the Northern Advocate.
