\n The data, analysed by Visual Capitalist reveals that among the most notable, the U.S. is 100% import-reliant on manganese, with Gabon serving as its primary supplier. Manganese is a crucial input in steel production and battery technologies, making Gabon a vital link in the U.S. industrial chain.\n <\/p>\n

\n South Africa, however, stands out as the continent\u2019s most influential supplier. It is the leading source of four critical minerals the U.S. depends on: platinum (89% import reliance), chromium (79%), palladium (57%), and zirconium (less than 25%).\n <\/p>\n

\n These minerals are indispensable across a wide range of applications, from catalytic converters and fuel cells to aerospace components and nuclear technologies.\n <\/p>\n

\n Platinum group metals, heavily concentrated in South Africa<\/a>, are central to hydrogen technologies and emissions control systems, while chromium is essential for stainless steel production.\n <\/p>\n

\n Beyond Africa, countries such as Chile, Canada, and Norway play major roles in supplying lithium, copper, nickel, zinc, and cobalt – materials central to electrification and clean energy systems.\n <\/p>\n

\n China, however, remains a dominant force across multiple categories, acting as the primary supplier of graphite, rare earth elements, arsenic, and tantalum. Its control over processing capacity, particularly for rare earths, continues to shape global supply dynamics and presents strategic vulnerabilities for the U.S.\n <\/p>\n

\n Against this backdrop, Africa\u2019s resource base offers Washington an opportunity to diversify supply chains and reduce overreliance on any single country<\/a>. South Africa\u2019s dominance in platinum group metals which are critical for hydrogen technologies and emissions control positions it as a key partner in the energy transition.\n <\/p>\n

\n As demand for critical minerals accelerates globally, Africa\u2019s role is set to expand, anchoring supply even as the U.S. balances its dependencies across multiple regions.\n <\/p>\n
