{"id":367062,"date":"2026-04-07T01:09:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T01:09:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/367062\/"},"modified":"2026-04-07T01:09:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T01:09:11","slug":"why-the-reserve-bank-is-tipped-to-hold-the-ocr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/367062\/","title":{"rendered":"Why the Reserve Bank is tipped to hold the OCR"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  [&amp;_p]:tit-sub-xl tit-sub-xl md:[&amp;_p]:d-tit-sub-xl md:d-tit-sub-xl mb-[1.3rem]\">Economists are predicting the OCR will be held steady tomorrow \u2013 despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the impact it is having on the domestic economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Since the war began at the end of February, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1news.co.nz\/2026\/03\/21\/4-a-litre-91-petrol-is-coming-but-take-care-with-data-showing-its-here\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">petrol prices<\/a> have soared, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1news.co.nz\/2026\/03\/29\/worries-about-global-economic-pain-deepen-as-the-war-in-iran-drags-on\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">global economic outlook<\/a> has worsened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Infometrics chief executive Brad Olsen told Breakfast today the Reserve Bank would likely hold the rate at its current 2.25%, and avoid a \u201cknee jerk\u201d reaction to what remains an uncertain situation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">\u201cFor the Reserve Bank, they don\u2019t want to be sort of switching track from one to another every time there is some new news. They\u2019re wanting to effectively look through that short-term instability, in case things change, in case you do see the Strait of Hormuz open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Olsen said the Reserve Bank is also clear when they\u2019re looking at inflation, \u201cwhat they are worried about is if there was persistence\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">\u201cThat\u2019s where things went wrong a couple of years back. We had so much economic activity in the system that every business was trying to increase their prices. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/ocr-472STYQ3HRBBXABPTRD7WNBQUU.jpg\" alt=\"Composite image: Vania Chandrawidjaja\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"ImageMetadata__MetadataParagraph-sc-hi5x8q-0 cWTYyG image-metadata\">Composite image: Vania Chandrawidjaja (Source: istock.com)<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">\u201cThis time around, the economy is a lot weaker, businesses might try but for the moment the Reserve Bank will be hoping with fewer sales about that businesses across the country just simply won\u2019t be able to increase prices to the same degree, and so hopefully core inflation will be restrained.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Similarly, ASB senior economist Mark Smith said in a report published last week the Reserve Bank \u201cseem in little hurry to move the OCR and are content to look through the short-term inflation impacts of the Iran shock\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">For the medium-term, Smith said a 0.25% OCR hike in December was expected, and 0.75% of OCR hikes from early 2027 have been pencilled in \u2013 with risks of \u201cmore pronounced\u201d hikes if New Zealand\u2019s inflation outlook trends higher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Westpac\u2019s report also expected the OCR to be held tomorrow, and referenced Reserve Bank Governor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1news.co.nz\/2026\/03\/24\/higher-inflation-in-near-term-lower-growth-due-to-iran-rbnz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Anna Breman\u2019s speech<\/a> on the economy on March 24.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">\u201cBreman indicated that rate hikes will only be brought forward should there be an accumulation of evidence suggesting that the oil shock is generating second-round pressures on wages and prices, leading to higher inflation over the medium term. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">\u201cThose secondround effects \u2013 which are more likely to occur if the conflict is prolonged \u2013 are unlikely to be evident for some time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">The Reserve Bank will review the OCR for the second time this year tomorrow at 2pm.
