{"id":367953,"date":"2026-04-07T14:30:22","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T14:30:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/367953\/"},"modified":"2026-04-07T14:30:22","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T14:30:22","slug":"sunlive-leadership-change-at-bop-aviation-trust","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/367953\/","title":{"rendered":"SunLive &#8211; Leadership change at BOP aviation trust"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A major leadership change has been announced at the Bay of Plenty Classic Aircraft Trust, with long\u2011serving chairman David Love stepping down after more than two decades guiding the organisation\u2019s growth and success.<\/p>\n<p>Love has been instrumental in the trust\u2019s journey since its beginnings, playing a pivotal role in shaping the organisation into one of New Zealand\u2019s leading aviation museums, a statement from the trust said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis passion for aviation, steady leadership and long-term commitment have underpinned the trust\u2019s success for more than two decades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile stepping aside from the chairmanship, Love will continue to serve the trust as secretary, ensuring his extensive knowledge and historical insight remain an integral part of the organisation\u2019s future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Current trustee Ross Brown has been appointed as the new chairman.<\/p>\n<p>Brown had a strong background in business, governance and marketing, and deep ties to the local community and was committed to building on the strong foundations laid under Love\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Brown\u2019s focus would be on continuing to raise the trust\u2019s profile while supporting its ongoing growth and development.<\/p>\n<p>The Bay of Plenty Classic Aircraft Trust was established in 2000, when a group of local businessmen and aviation enthusiasts investigated a possible restoration of a World War II-era hangar at Tauranga Airfield.<\/p>\n<p>Although the original structure proved unsalvageable, the initiative led to the formation of the trust and the construction of a new, purpose-built facility.<\/p>\n<p>Located at the entrance to Tauranga Airport on Jean Batten Drive, Mount Maunganui, the museum operates as Classic Flyers NZ.<\/p>\n<p>It was designed as a \u201cliving\u201d or flying museum, with a strong emphasis on keeping aircraft operational and encouraging regular flight activity rather than static display.<\/p>\n<p>The museum officially opened on Saturday, May 28, 2005, marked by an air display and flypast.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, it has grown into a highly regarded attraction for aviation enthusiasts and an important cultural asset for the wider Bay of Plenty community.<\/p>\n<p>Classic Flyers founder, trustee and chief executive Andrew Gormlie paid tribute to Love while welcoming the new appointment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid\u2019s vision and dedication over more than two decades have been instrumental in creating what we have today,\u201d Gormlie said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis continued involvement as secretary ensures we retain that invaluable experience.
