{"id":368347,"date":"2026-04-07T19:55:12","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T19:55:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/368347\/"},"modified":"2026-04-07T19:55:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T19:55:12","slug":"everybody-who-walks-in-goes-wow-all-things-property-under-oneroof","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/368347\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Everybody who walks in goes wow\u2019, All things property, under OneRoof"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8211; Alison Bevin built a Havelock North home designed by her brother, Nick Bevin, and inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and Philip Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; The two-bedroom house features unique materials like zinc and cedar, winning a New Zealand Institute of Architecture award in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Bevin is selling the home, valued at mid-$3m, after commissioning another design from her brother.<\/p>\n<p>When a newly divorced Kiwi found herself without a home, she turned to family for help.<\/p>\n<p>Alison Bevin told OneRoof that she had returned to New Zealand from a stint overseas and wanted to build a house in Havelock North.<\/p>\n<p>She immediately tapped her brother, Nick Bevin, of Bevin + Slessor Architects, and gave him free rein on the design, as long as he drew inspiration from design legends Frank Lloyd Wright and Philip Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was coming out of a rather long divorce. But I decided, as a start to my new life as a single woman, I was going to build a home,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"38a Muritai Crescent, in Havelock North, was designed by architect Nick Bevin for his sister. Photo \/ Supplied <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said to him [Nick], \u2018You can explore unusual materials, and if you wish, you can design an award-winning home for you \u2013 not for me\u2019. And that was about it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very much, \u2018this is how I want to feel in my home, this is how I want to be, and I\u2019d like to do a modern home, modernist, but explore different materials\u2019. And off he went. The house also featured in various publications, including 100 Dream Houses from Downunder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody who walks in goes, \u2018Wow, this is amazing\u2019, because it\u2019s modern, but it\u2019s 20 years old, and you know, it doesn\u2019t look it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cI\u2019ve never wanted to change anything in that house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"38a Muritai Crescent, in Havelock North, was designed by architect Nick Bevin for his sister. Photo \/ Supplied<\/p>\n<p>She admired her brother\u2019s work so much that she asked him to design another home for her in Havelock North, which was his last commission before retiring.<\/p>\n<p>That home was completed last year, which is why she\u2019s decided to sell 38A Muritai Crescent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a bit bittersweet. It\u2019s just sort of one of those once it\u2019s gone it\u2019s gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said she held on to 38A Muritai Crescent for years, even while living overseas, because of its sentimental value.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was the start. It was my independence. I made my own decisions, and I spent my own money the way I wanted to spend it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mint Realty listing agent Nic Goodman said the house was genuinely her favourite.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just been so brilliantly designed. You are looking out at the garden as soon as you open the front door.
