Emergency services have resolved a toxic gas issue at a Southland meatworks.<\/p>\n
Earlier today, the building was\u00a0 evacuated due to elevated levels of a toxic gas after a fire this morning.<\/p>\n
A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said two fire trucks and a Hazmat command unit remained in attendance after the fire due to elevated readings of hydrogen sulphide in the building.<\/p>\n
The gas is highly toxic, flammable and has a rotten-egg odor.<\/p>\n
But a spokesman said they were \u201cable to deal with the gas just with ventilation fans\u201d and they left at about 10:40am.<\/p>\n
Fenz responded to an automatic alarm activation at the Alliance Group Lorneville Plant at about 5:40 this morning.<\/p>\n
The plant was filled with smoke and all people were evacuated and accounted for.<\/p>\n
In total, six trucks responded as well as a tanker and a Hazmat command unit.<\/p>\n
The fire was contained by about 7am but the spokesman could not advise what the specific cause of the fire was.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Emergency services have resolved a toxic gas issue at a Southland meatworks.
