Foreign Minister Winston Peters has welcomed the news of a two-week ceasefire agreement in the Iran war \u2013 but cautioned there was still important work to be done to bring a lasting end to the conflict.<\/p>\n

Earlier today<\/a>, US President Donald Trump held off on his threats against Iran with less than two hours left on his deadline he set for Tehran.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s Supreme National Security Council said it accepted a two-week ceasefire \u2013 and it would negotiate with the US in Islamabad beginning Friday.<\/p>\n

On the news, Peters said: \u201cWe welcome all efforts to bring an end to this conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile this is encouraging news, there remains significant important work to be done in the coming days to secure a lasting ceasefire.\u201d<\/p>\n

Peters said New Zealand is grateful for the work of Pakistan, and others such as T\u00fcrkiye and Egypt, to seek a solution to the crisis.<\/p>\n

Peters met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio earlier today in Washington DC.<\/p>\n

He noted at the meeting<\/a> there was discussion of the \u201cwide-ranging impacts and disruptions\u201d both for those in the Middle East \u201cand further afield, including New Zealand and the Pacific region”.<\/p>\n
