NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 22 \u2013 Starlink, a satellite internet firm owned by the world\u2019s richest man, Elon Musk, added 359 new customers in Kenya in Q4 of this year, new data shows.<\/p>\n
The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) Q4 Sector Statistics Report for the financial year 2024\/2025 indicates that the firm grew its subscriber base from 17,066 (January\u2013March 2025) to 17,425 (April\u2013June 2025).<\/p>\n
Starlink, which launched in Kenya last year, has grown in popularity for offering ultra-speed internet services to both served and unserved areas, enabling individuals and communities living in off-grid or remote locations to access the internet without the need for traditional network provider masts.<\/p>\n
However, full adoption has been hindered by the high initial cost of acquiring the gadgets, which range between about Sh28,000 and Sh45,000.<\/p>\n
The data also shows that Starlink\u2019s local market share fell to 0.8 percent from 0.9 percent in the review period.<\/p>\n
Aggressive sign-up of clients in unserved and underserved areas also saw Safaricom maintain its dominance in Kenya\u2019s internet market share at 34.3 percent after growing its users to 735,749 between April and June this year, compared to 678,118 between January and March.<\/p>\n
Jamii Telecommunications Ltd, Wananchi Group (Kenya) Ltd, and Poa Internet Kenya Ltd similarly grew their customer bases to 442,076, 271,822 and 268,554 respectively.<\/p>\n
\u201cSafaricom PLC topped in fixed data\/Internet subscriptions with a market share of 34.3 per cent, followed by Jamii Telecommunications Limited at 20.6 per cent,\u201d CA data shows.<\/p>\n
\u201cAhadi Wireless Limited appeared in the top ten list of fixed internet service providers, as shown in Table 12. Ahadi Wireless Limited joined the top ten categories with a market share of 7.5 per cent.\u201d<\/p>\n
