{"id":371744,"date":"2026-04-09T19:56:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T19:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/371744\/"},"modified":"2026-04-09T19:56:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T19:56:09","slug":"cook-islands-nz-security-pact-is-about-us-moving-forward-as-two-countries-pm-brown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/371744\/","title":{"rendered":"Cook Islands-NZ security pact &#8216;is about us moving forward as two countries&#8217; &#8211; PM Brown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prime Minister Mark Brown says New Zealand remains the Cook Islands&#8217; &#8220;partner of choice&#8221; in security, but insists that will not change how it engages with global partners.<\/p>\n<p>His comments come after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/international\/pacific-news\/591419\/cook-islands-and-nz-talking-again-with-clarity-on-path-forward\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">signing of a new defence and security declaration<\/a> with New Zealand, and the resumption of New Zealand funding to the Cook Islands, following a year long rift in the relationship.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;New Zealand, clearly in the declaration that we&#8217;ve signed, is our partner of choice, but this does not dictate to us how our foreign policy is applied,&#8221; Brown told RNZ Pacific.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is incumbent on the Cook Islands to be able to look at other development partners who wish to engage with the Cook Islands across a whole range of areas to look at how we can best advance the priorities of our country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Brown said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/international\/pacific-news\/591328\/winston-peters-signs-defence-and-security-declaration-with-cook-islands-pm-mark-brown\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new agreement<\/a> helps strengthen ties between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re very pleased to be able to sign on the declaration of defence and security between the Cooks and New Zealand. So this really provides a platform where we can build and strengthen and grow the relationship going forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The relationship between the Cook Islands and New Zealand came under strain in early 2025 after the Cook Islands [https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/political\/542268\/cook-islands-government-releases-details-of-deal-with-china signed a deal with China, raising concerns in Wellington over a lack of consultation.<\/p>\n<p>New Zealand later announced they would pause nearly NZ$30 million worth of annual funding.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/4JQUGJF_WhatsApp_Image_2026_04_01_at_5_21_31_PM_jpeg.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"787\" alt=\"Foreign Minister Winston Peters arrives in Cook Islands.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nForeign Minister Winston Peters arrives in Cook Islands and is greeted by Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown.<br \/>\nPhoto: Supplied \/ John Tulloch\n<\/p>\n<p>With funding resuming a year later, New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters said the new agreement reset the two countries dynamic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The China deal is behind us. That&#8217;s the announcement today. We&#8217;re not going to go back there.
