The central bank emphasized that the responsibility to assist customers primarily lies with the originating financial institution (OFI), or the bank or e-wallet used to send the money.

Once a report is filed, the sending institution is expected to coordinate with the receiving financial institution (RFI) to trace and possibly recover the funds. Both parties are required to make reasonable efforts under existing regulations.

Report the transaction immediately to your bank or e-wallet
Provide complete details, including:

Payor’s name
Contact number
Source account (where the money was sent from)
Recipient account details
Transaction amount
Date and time of the transaction

Act fast to increase chances of recovery before funds are withdrawn
The sending bank/e-wallet (OFI) will coordinate with the receiving institution (RFI)
Expect results after the investigation period

For those who encounter this situation, the BSP advises reporting the transaction as soon as possible and providing accurate details to help trace the funds. Acting quickly is critical, as delays may reduce the likelihood of recovery.

During the investigation, financial institutions may temporarily hold the disputed amount if it is still available and suspend any related fees or charges. In some cases, customers may also receive provisional credit while the issue is being reviewed. Banks are required to inform clients of the results within three banking days after the investigation is completed.

Despite these safeguards, recovery is not guaranteed. Since most digital transactions are processed in real time, funds sent to the wrong account may already be accessed by the recipient before any action can be taken.

E-wallet providers like GCash and Maya have also reminded users to double-check recipient details before confirming transactions. In many cases, reversing a transfer depends on the recipient’s cooperation, although funds sent to inactive or non-existent accounts may still be returned.

Ultimately, the BSP stressed that while assistance is available, prevention remains the best approach when it comes to digital payments.

React to this article:

                        👍

                        ❤️

                        😂

                        😮

                        😢

                        😡

Sending money to the wrong account can be difficult to reverse, especially as most digital payments today are…

[16
194721,916,194722,11502,43305,246,43303,59,342,111,139,69,4291,145
0":"post-372814","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-mobile","8":"tag-bangko-sentral-ng-pilipinas","9":"tag-banking","10":"tag-bsp","11":"tag-digital-payments","12":"tag-e-wallets","13":"tag-finance","14":"tag-gcash","15":"tag-maya","16":"tag-mobile","17":"tag-new-zealand","18":"tag-newzealand","19":"tag-nz","20":"tag-philippines","21":"tag-technology
["GET
