All Shumer has to do is give the virtual assistant running on his Mac Mini a broad task, and it handles the rest. That includes actions that would usually require typing, clicking and scrolling, such as browsing websites and signing into accounts.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmns3yowv00023b6q9blt68p9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It may be strange to his friends outside of tech, but for hobbyists like himself, \u201cyou\u2019re like, \u2018Oh, of course there\u2019s a computer using itself,\u2019\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmns3yowv00033b6qon9u1bp5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Shumer, an AI investor and author of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/02\/19\/tech\/ai-jobs-big-thing-hype\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">viral essay on AI and jobs<\/a> from February, is one of many tech enthusiasts who recently purchased a Mac mini to run the buzzy AI agent OpenClaw.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmns3yowv00043b6qyp6id7jk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            AI dabblers have been snatching up Apple\u2019s petite silver desktop because it has all the right ingredients to run AI agents: a convenient design, processing power and a relatively affordable price at a time when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/02\/27\/tech\/ai-memory-chips-smartphones-intl-hnk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">memory prices are surging<\/a>. Apple declined to comment for this story, but analysts told CNN Mac shipments grew last year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmns3yowv00053b6q7gs0we89@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Mac mini has become a status symbol among AI tinkerers, and some analysts say the device\u2019s growing popularity may preface a broader shift in how people use computers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmns3yowv00063b6qq8c3ia36@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe think we\u2019re in this highly transformative phase for the PC industry,\u201d said Linn Huang, an analyst for the International Data Corporation who follows the PC market. \u201cNot only are we talking about hardware changing, we\u2019re talking about the user experience itself vastly changing.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmns3yowv00083b6q75pz4lay@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Apple\u2019s puck-shaped Mac mini, essentially a tiny version of a computer tower that\u2019s meant to be connected to an external keyboard and monitor, has been around for years. The latest version was released in 2024.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmns3yowv00093b6qy6bo01ww@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/29\/business\/china-openclaw-ai-anxiety-intl-hnk-dst\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">excitement over OpenClaw<\/a>, an autonomous AI agent that can operate a user\u2019s device to accomplish tasks, has made Apple\u2019s tiny desktop a hot commodity over the past few months.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmns3yowv000a3b6qdb3vx1y2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Shipping estimates for certain configurations of the Mac mini are up to 10-12 weeks, with the earliest Apple Store pickup date in New York City in mid-July.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmns3yowv000b3b6q9mfamph8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Shumer said an Apple Store employee even referred to the Mac mini as an  <br \/>\u201cOpenClaw machine\u201d when he recently visited a New York City location.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/shutterstock-editorial-16497950j.jpg\" alt=\"A Mac mini in Krakow, Poland on January 31, 2026.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmns3yowv000c3b6qf8vi9696@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s difficult to say whether OpenClaw has boosted Apple\u2019s bottom line, since the tech giant doesn\u2019t break out sales by individual product and OpenClaw only launched in November.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmns3yowv000d3b6q2kel9w52@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, tech market research firm Omdia estimated Mac mini shipments grew by double digits in 2025 compared to 2024. Kieren Jessop, a research manager for Omdia, described the Mac mini\u2019s anecdotal popularity in tech circles as \u201creal\u201d and \u201cdurable\u201d in an email to CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmns3yowv000e3b6qx53p5fza@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Huang also said Apple\u2019s Mac desktops sales grew more than its laptop sales in 2025.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmns3yowv000g3b6qdr1htgpf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A Mac mini isn\u2019t required for OpenClaw, but there are a few reasons why many prefer it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmns3yowv000h3b6qy6eqd7cu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Running AI models on a computer versus in the cloud is usually more private, since information doesn\u2019t have to leave the device. Using a separate computer for OpenClaw is also more secure, since users can choose to preload the device only with information they want the agent to have access to.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmns3yowv000i3b6qz7e2bpne@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Starting at $599, it\u2019s also relatively affordable at a time when memory prices are soaring.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmns3yowv000j3b6qlmo11fbh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Mac mini\u2019s design also appeals to some OpenClaw users. The AI agent can perform tasks autonomously without constant questions or commands, so it doesn\u2019t need a computer with an attached display and keyboard like a laptop.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmns3yowv000k3b6q4t7z8ywd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Most people hook up their OpenClaw agent to services they can access from their phones, like a messaging app. Roy Derks, a principal product manager at IBM, has OpenClaw set up on his home Mac mini and communicates with it through an app like WhatsApp or Telegram. He mostly uses the AI agent to research things related to his personal life while he\u2019s at the office, like toys for his child.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmns3yowv000l3b6qg5cfe06p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s running in the background, doing things that I\u2019m not doing at work,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmns3yowv000m3b6qq9w7x00q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            App developer Cl\u00e9ment Sauvage told CNN he has three Mac minis running OpenClaw: one for managing personal operations, like his emails and to-do list; another for development and projects; and a third that acts as a \u201ccentral brain\u201d to coordinate tasks between the machines.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gettyimages-2265696197.jpg\" alt=\"The OpenClaw website shown on a smartphone in Shanghai, China, on March 12, 2026.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmns3yowv000o3b6qqf9c2323@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The fervor around OpenClaw has snowballed into a global community of tech-savvy developers and enthusiasts. OpenClaw conferences are popping up around the world. Derks attended one in San Francisco, where he said people were still lining up to get in even two hours after the event had started.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmns3yowv000p3b6q2c3gedap@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While the lobster has become the agent\u2019s primary mascot, the Mac mini has become a symbol of its own. On Etsy, you\u2019ll find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etsy.com\/listing\/4474487686\/mac-mini-m4-stand-openclaw-inspired-3d?ls=a&amp;ga_order=most_relevant&amp;ga_search_type=all&amp;ga_view_type=gallery&amp;ga_search_query=openclaw+mac+mini&amp;ref=sc_gallery-1-2&amp;sr_prefetch=0&amp;pf_from=search&amp;pro=1&amp;frs=1&amp;plkey=EuqUEa3saPwUY-8-K7hTZAleaz7e%3ALTfb5b25e0212cf7c54c6040dc1043b4283f1d6527\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mac mini stands<\/a> in the shape of a lobster arm. Sauvage made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/csauvage\/wwdc-2026-the-unofficial-community-enamel-pins?ref=5cuhdh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a set of collectible pins<\/a> for Apple\u2019s upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference; one shows a lobster perched on top of a Mac mini.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmns3yowv000q3b6q2a0yvu2v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Interest in the Mac mini may seem niche today. But it\u2019s part of what some analysts see as a broader trend around the role of computers in the AI world.
