{"id":372944,"date":"2026-04-10T12:49:18","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T12:49:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/372944\/"},"modified":"2026-04-10T12:49:18","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T12:49:18","slug":"sunlive-new-10m-bridge-planned-for-key-sh36-route","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/372944\/","title":{"rendered":"SunLive &#8211; New $10m bridge planned for key SH36 route"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Construction of a new bridge over the Hauraki Stream on State Highway 36, just north of Lake Rotorua near the Hamurana intersection, will begin later this month.<\/p>\n<p>SH36 is one of only two state highways linking Rotorua with Tauranga and the western Bay of Plenty.<\/p>\n<p>The project will see the replacement of an ageing culvert \u2013 more than 80 years old \u2013 with a wider, stronger single\u2011span bridge designed to better withstand future weather events and provide safer, more reliable travel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current culvert on SH36 north of Hamurana, while safe to use, is at the end of its useful life and needs replacing,\u201d Transport Minister Chris Bishop said in a statement on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cState Highway 36 is a vital connection between Tauranga and Rotorua, and I\u2019m pleased NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi is prioritising delivery of a fit\u2011for\u2011purpose bridge replacement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NZTA said the existing culvert has served the region well, but ongoing maintenance and emergency works over recent years have shown that replacing it with a modern structure is a more cost-effective, long-term solution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSH36 has undergone significant maintenance following several severe weather events,\u201d an NZTA spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the current structure remains safe to use, replacing it with a modern and more resilient bridge will improve the long-term reliability of this important route and help keep our regional communities connected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\" A map showing where the bridge will be built on SH36. Image \/ NZTA<\/p>\n<p>Construction will be carried out by Isaac Construction at a total cost of $10-$12 million and will use prefabricated bridge components to speed up delivery and reduce disruption.<\/p>\n<p>To minimise traffic impacts, the new bridge will be built in half widths, allowing single-lane traffic to continue through the site for most of the construction period.<\/p>\n<p>However, NZTA said some disruption is unavoidable because of the narrow road corridor and steep gully below the site.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeeping road closures to a minimum has been a key part of the design process,\u201d the NZTA spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny full closures that are required will be communicated well in advance so road users can plan ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bridge replacement is part of a wider programme of works approved under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sunlive.co.nz\/news\/350431-record--1-9b-transport-investment-in-bop.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sunlive.co.nz\/news\/350431-record--1-9b-transport-investment-in-bop.html\">2024-27 National Land Transport Programme<\/a> (NLTP), which includes repair or upgrade work on nine priority bridges and culverts across the state highway network.<\/p>\n<p>Since July 2024, a further five priority locations have been added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFixing the basics of our roading network is a priority for this Government,\u201d Bishop said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany bridges around the country require speed or weight restrictions due to their age and condition, and it\u2019s essential these priority structures are replaced when funding becomes available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Work on the site is expected to be completed in early 2027.<\/p>\n<p>NZTA said it remains focused on delivering the project safely and efficiently while keeping residents, businesses and road users informed throughout construction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe appreciate the patience of the local community and travellers using SH36 and will continue to provide regular updates as the project progresses,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Construction of a new bridge over the Hauraki Stream on State Highway 36, just north of Lake Rotorua&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":372945,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[111,43,139,69],"class_list":{"0":"post-372944","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-new-zealand","8":"tag-new-zealand","9":"tag-news","10":"tag-newzealand","11":"tag-nz"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/372944","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=372944"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/372944\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/372945"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=372944"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=372944"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=372944"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
