Opening up about her parents\u2019 separation, Nora shared, \u201cThey got a divorce, and he kind of just disappeared for the longest time.\u201d Actor-dancer Nora Fatehi<\/a> got candid about her personal life in a recent conversation, opening up about growing up with a single mother, dealing with \u201cdaddy issues,\u201d and how it continues to impact her relationships.When asked if being raised by a single mom affected her relationship with men, Nora didn\u2019t hold back. \u201cYeah. Oh my God, so much. Let\u2019s talk about daddy issues. I have daddy issues\u2014I really do,\u201d she told Lilly Singh.She went on to explain the larger cultural context, adding, \u201cLike in a lot of brown families, it\u2019s hard to get them to understand us… we\u2019re a different generation\u2014we have different goals, we want to do things differently, our mentality is different.\u201dTalking about immigrant households, she said, \u201cAll my friends have this issue\u2014not just me… They try to hold you close, and that comes from a place of protection. But then you start to battle with what you\u2019re learning outside… you come back home and it feels like a completely different world.\u201dShe added that this duality can be mentally taxing. \u201cThat can really challenge you mentally when you\u2019re trying to find yourself… there\u2019s always that fear\u2014how are they going to feel, what are they going to say?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018He disappeared… you start to resent men\u2019<\/p>\n

Opening up about her parents\u2019 separation, Nora shared, \u201cThey got a divorce, and he kind of just disappeared for the longest time.\u201dShe admitted that the experience shaped her emotional responses. \u201cWhen you see that and you grow older, you start to resent men and the way they treat women.\u201dWhile she acknowledged meeting \u201ca lot of great men,\u201d she said the deeper impact stayed. \u201cWhen you have daddy issues, it turns into abandonment issues. If someone doesn\u2019t want to be with you… it\u2019s really hard on you. It\u2019s hard to move on.\u201dReflecting on past relationships, she said, \u201cI\u2019ve been with people who weren\u2019t good for me… but I didn\u2019t take breakups easily because I hadn\u2019t resolved my abandonment issues.\u201dNora added with striking honesty, \u201cYou think, \u2018It\u2019s not a him problem\u2014it\u2019s a me problem.\u2019 But it also is kind of a him problem, because it comes from a man.\u201dShe continued, \u201cI still deal with that, to be honest… I\u2019m still trying to figure out how to navigate relationships with men because I do have unresolved issues with my dad.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u2018It took my mom 14 years to leave\u2019<\/p>\n

When asked if there was shame around divorce, Nora said, \u201cYeah… actually, not anymore. Now everyone is getting divorced.\u201dShe then revealed a deeply personal detail. \u201cIt took my mom 14 years to leave my dad. Fourteen years. Not four, not five\u2014fourteen.\u201dExplaining why, she said, \u201cMy grandma, my aunts\u2014everyone kept telling her, \u2018Just be patient.\u2019 You know that mindset\u2014\u2018Log kya kahenge?\u2019\u201dQuestioning that societal pressure, Nora added, \u201cWe worry so much about \u2018people\u2019… but who are these people? They\u2019re not paying your rent… they\u2019re not there when you\u2019re sick.\u201dShe acknowledged generational differences, saying, \u201cThey came from a different mentality where there was shame attached to divorce\u2014\u2018What will people think?\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n

\u2018Women should have a backup to protect their peace\u2019<\/p>\n

Reflecting on what she learned from her mother\u2019s journey, Nora emphasised independence. \u201cI think that\u2019s why it\u2019s so important for a woman to take care of herself, to have a backup, to have a solid foundation.\u201dShe added, \u201cEven if she chooses to be with a man… if anything goes wrong, she should be able to pick herself up and leave to protect her mental peace.\u201dNora concluded by pointing out the harsh reality many women faced. \u201cA lot of women weren\u2019t able to do that\u2026 so they stayed in situations they didn\u2019t want to be in because they felt like, \u2018What will I do if I leave?
