{"id":373439,"date":"2026-04-10T20:05:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T20:05:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/373439\/"},"modified":"2026-04-10T20:05:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T20:05:07","slug":"live-weather-rain-and-wind-warnings-watches-in-place-for-much-of-north-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/373439\/","title":{"rendered":"Live weather: Rain and wind warnings, watches in place for much of North Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cyclone Vaianu continues making its way toward North Island, with an orange heavy rain warning in place for Northland and parts of Bay of Islands from Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p>Coromandel Peninsula is under a red strong wind warning and orange heavy rain warning from the early hours of Sunday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Northland and south of Bay of Islands to Hokianga Harbour, Auckland and Great Barrier Island are under orange heavy rain warnings from Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p>An orange heavy rain warning will be in place from the early hours of Sunday in the Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty west of Whakatane including Rotorua and Gisborne\/Tairawhiti north of Tolaga Bay.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, MetService warned the combination of damaging winds, heavy rain and coastal inundation brought by Cyclone Vaianu makes this a multi-hazard, potentially life-threatening event.<\/p>\n<p>There were concerns for power outages, falling trees, flooding, slips and potential road closures that could isolate communities.<\/p>\n<p>The forecaster urged people to keep up to date with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metservice.com\/warnings\/home\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">latest forecasts<\/a>, adjust plans as needed and be prepared to act, following all advice of local authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy rain watches have also been issued.
