OurAuckland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Update 11 April 2026 <\/p>\n<p>Civil Defence Centres to open at 9pm Saturday for urgent shelter\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Auckland Emergency Management will open five Civil Defence Centres at 9pm this evening to support those in need in T\u0101maki Makaurau.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These centres will provide emergency shelter for anyone who has become displaced and cannot shelter with friends or wh\u0101nau overnight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you need to evacuate or seek shelter, please make your way to one of our Civil Defence Centres which will be open from 9pm on Saturday 11 April. \u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cIn preparation for what we expect to be a windy and wet night across the region, we are taking the precaution of offering centres where we have identified potential need,\u201d says Auckland Emergency Management Duty Controller Sarah Le Claire.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are prepared to open in other location if the need arises.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These centres will offer shelter and light snacks (tea, coffee and biscuits), and some basic sleeping options like inflatable mattresses. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pack warm clothing, essential items like medicines, baby and children\u2019s items, including books and games, as well as special food items. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Please try to arrange alternative care for pets but if this is not possible, remember to bring supplies for them. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All Civil Defence Centres are wheelchair accessible, and a small number of pets can be accommodated. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Civil Defence Centre locations \u00a0<br \/>\u2022 \u00a0 \u00a0Ostend Hall, Waiheke Island &#8211; Have the talk and make a plan with wh\u0101nau and friends about what you would do and where you would go if it is unsafe to shelter in place.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Have <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aucklandemergencymanagement.govt.nz\/get-prepared\/get-home-ready\/make-a-grab-bag\/\" target=\"_blank\">a grab bag<\/a> prepped and ready with essentials like:<\/p>\n<p>Medication<br \/>\nWarm clothes and sturdy shoes<br \/>\nChargers<br \/>\nSnacks and water<br \/>\nAnd remember babies and pets\u2019 needs too.<\/p>\n<p>Delay unnecessary travel<\/p>\n<p>Plan your travel carefully and consider whether your travel this weekend is essential.<br \/>\nMake sure you drive to the conditions and never drive through floodwaters or over slips.<br \/>\nDrivers should expect the Auckland Harbour Bridge may need to be fully closed if wind gusts get too high.
