(Photo by Farooq NAEEM \/ AFP)\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nA policeman stands guard in front of a digital screen displaying news of US\u2013Iran peace talks along a road in Islamabad on 10 April 2026.<br \/>\nPhoto: Farooq Naeem \/ AFP\n<\/p>\n<p>Iran demands ceasefire in Lebanon, sanctions relief before talks begin<br \/>\nFighting continues in Lebanon despite US-Iran ceasefire<br \/>\nIran seeks control over Strait of Hormuz, compensation for war damage <\/p>\n<p>Senior US and Iranian leaders were in the Pakistani capital Islamabad on Saturday (all times local) for negotiations to end their six-week-old war, although Tehran threw the talks into doubt by saying they could not begin without commitments on Lebanon and sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/world\/592074\/us-team-heads-to-iran-talks-in-pakistan-with-low-expectations\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US delegation<\/a>, led by Vice President JD Vance and including President Donald Trump&#8217;s special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner, landed in two US air force planes at an air base in Islamabad on Saturday morning, Pakistani sources said.<\/p>\n<p>The Iranian delegation, led by parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, arrived on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>These will be the highest-level US-Iran talks since the Islamic Revolution of 1979 and the first official face-to-face negotiations between the two sides since 2015, when the two sides reached a deal on Iran&#8217;s nuclear programme.<\/p>\n<p>Trump scrapped the nuclear deal in 2018 during his first term in office. That same year, Iran&#8217;s then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed at the start of the war six weeks ago, banned further direct talks between US and Iranian officials.<\/p>\n<p>Iran has &#8216;no cards&#8217;, says Trump<\/p>\n<p>Qalibaf said on X that Washington had previously agreed to unblock Iranian assets and to a ceasefire in Lebanon, where Israeli attacks on Iran-backed Hezbollah militants have killed nearly 2,000 people since the start of the fighting in March.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/4JQK5E7_AFP__20260406__A6VW2MN__v1__HighRes__UsPresidentDonaldTrumpHoldsPresserAmidIranWar_jpg.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"700\" alt=\"US President Donald Trump, alongside US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth (C) and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine (R), speaks about the conflict in Iran in the James S. (Photo by Brendan SMIALOWSKI \/ AFP)\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nUS President Donald Trump, alongside US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth (C) and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine.<br \/>\nPhoto: BRENDAN SMIALOWSKI \/ AFP\n<\/p>\n<p>He said talks would not start until those pledges were fulfilled.<\/p>\n<p>Israel and the US have said the Lebanon campaign is not part of the Iran-US ceasefire, while Tehran insists it is.<\/p>\n<p>Qalibaf said separately that Iran was ready to reach a deal if Washington offered what he described as a genuine agreement and granted Iran its rights, Iranian state media reported.<\/p>\n<p>The White House did not immediately comment on the Iranian demands, but Trump posted on social media that the only reason the Iranians were alive was to negotiate a deal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Iranians don&#8217;t seem to realise they have no cards, other than a short-term extortion of the World by using International Waterways. The only reason they are alive today is to negotiate!&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Vance, speaking as he headed to Pakistan, said he expected a positive outcome but added: &#8220;If they&#8217;re going to try to play us, then they&#8217;re going to find the negotiating team is not that receptive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Islamabad was under an unprecedented lockdown on Saturday with thousands of paramilitary personnel and army troops on the streets ahead of what Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called &#8220;make-or-break&#8221; talks.<\/p>\n<p>Trump announced a two-week ceasefire in the war on Tuesday, which has halted US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran.<\/p>\n<p>But it has not ended Iran&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/political\/592075\/strait-of-hormuz-tolls-would-impact-on-freedom-of-navigation-law-expert\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blockade of the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, which has caused the biggest-ever disruption to global energy supplies, or calmed the parallel war between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p>Fighting continues in Lebanon<\/p>\n<p>The Israeli ambassador to the US, Yechiel Leiter, and his Lebanese counterpart, Nada Hamadeh Moawad, will hold talks in Washington on Tuesday, Israeli and Lebanese officials said, amid the conflicting accounts on what those talks would cover.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/4JQEPT6_AFP__20260409__A78U2CQ__v1__HighRes__LebanonIsraelIranUsWar_jpg.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"700\" alt=\"Lebanese first responders use a digger to search under the rubble at the site of an Israeli airstrike that targeted a building the day before in Beirut's Corniche al-Mazraa neighbourhood on April 9, 2026. One strike on a government building in the city of Nabatieh killed 13 members of Lebanon&#8217;s state security forces, President Joseph Aoun said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Hezbollah said in a statement on its Telegram channel that it fired rocket salvos at northern Israeli towns in response.<\/p>\n<p>Hours after the ceasefire was announced, Israel launched the biggest attack of the war, killing more than 350 people in surprise strikes on heavily populated areas, Lebanese authorities said.<\/p>\n<p>Tehran&#8217;s agenda at the talks also includes demands for major new concessions, including the end of sanctions that crippled its economy for years, and acknowledgement of its authority over the Strait of Hormuz, where it aims to collect transit fees and control access in what would amount to a huge shift in regional power.<\/p>\n<p>Iran&#8217;s ships were sailing through the strait unimpeded on Friday, while those of other countries remained hemmed inside.<\/p>\n<p>Disruption to energy supplies has fed inflation and slowed the global economy, with an impact expected to last for months even if negotiators succeed in reopening the strait.<\/p>\n<p>The hard line taken by Iran&#8217;s leaders ahead of the negotiations followed a defiant message from its new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/4JRUO91_AFP__20260312__A2ZB8WR__v2__HighRes__TopshotIranUsIsraelWar_jpg.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"700\" alt=\"A man watches a televised statement by Iran's new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei on March 12, 2026.
