Auckland-based ACT MP Simon Court says the Government\u2019s
\nAuckland deal is a positive step, but the Mayor is wrong
\nto suggest greenfields development can be ruled
\nout<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis deal sets the direction for unlocking
\nAuckland\u2019s potential. ACT has been campaigning for
\nregional deals like this since 2019, and it\u2019s good to see
\nprogress on better coordination between central and local
\ngovernment,\u201d says Court.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut let\u2019s set things
\nstraight. No mayor should get to decide where New Zealanders
\nare allowed to live.<\/p>\n

\u201cWayne Brown might not like the
\nidea of Aucklanders living in new homes with big, beautiful
\nbackyards. But people should be able to build on greenfields
\nwhether he likes it or not, and that’s why ACT is driving
\nreform of Resource Management and infrastructure
\nfunding.<\/p>\n

\u201cAuckland\u2019s housing crisis has been
\ndriven by decades of planning rules that make it too hard to
\nbuild. It\u2019s often taken longer to get permission than to
\nactually build. That has locked a generation out of home
\nownership and driven up costs across the city.<\/p>\n

\u201cA
\nresource management system that says \u2018yes\u2019 to
\ndevelopment will provide far more flexibility about where
\ndevelopment can occur, not just where central planners think
\npeople should live.<\/p>\n

\u201cChanges to the Infrastructure
\nFunding and Financing framework will also help. For years, a
\nlack of pipes, roads, and basic infrastructure has been a
\nhandbrake on builders. Developers have been stuck waiting on
\ncouncils that can\u2019t or won\u2019t deliver.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe
\nimprovements currently before select committee will mean
\ndevelopers are no longer reliant on councils to fund growth.
\nThat unlocks both greenfields and brownfields
\ndevelopment.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAucklanders want choice, including
\nthe ability to own a home with space. The next generation
\nwill have homes, and some will be apartments, yes, but many
\nwill be houses with backyards. It\u2019s something people
\nshould be free to
\nchoose.\u201d<\/p>\n
