In response, UL conducted tests using both the public and private version of 3DMark, which shows the same Steel Nomad Light benchmark running on the public version were up to 24% higher than those from the private version.

UL concluded that the offending smartphones were recognizing the 3DMark application by its package name and deliberately alters their performance of its Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset specifically for the benchmark, the behavior of which resembles the phone’s performance-boosting “Diablo” mode. The company found that this behavior cannot be disabled when the benchmark is running, and that runs afoul of 3DMark’s benchmarking rules.

“Optional performance modes that users can enable are allowed under our rules, provided they are disabled by default,” UL said in its report. “A device must run the benchmark in the same way it would run other applications unless the user has explicitly selected an optional mode.” Additionally, UL’s testing also corroborated Saityo’s findings as it reported the devices registering surface temperatures “exceeding 50°C in some areas,” or hot enough to cause first-degree burns.

Per Android Authority, Nubia (parent brand of REDMAGIC) released a statement as follows:

REDMAGIC devices are designed to deliver high-performance experiences, particularly for intensive gaming and power-user scenarios. To support this, our devices offer multiple performance modes that allow users to adjust CPU, GPU, and thermal settings based on their needs. For example, ‘Diablo Mode’ is designed to maximize performance under demanding conditions.

Balancing performance, power consumption, and thermal management is a key focus of our system design. The device dynamically assesses application load in real time and allocates resources accordingly. When running high-demand applications, such as graphically intensive 3D games, the system applies higher performance scheduling to ensure a smooth and stable experience.

Regarding benchmarking, we view it as an indicator of a device’s performance potential under controlled, high-load conditions. As such, performance outcomes may vary depending on system settings, usage scenarios, and environmental factors.

We remain committed to delivering transparent, high-performance products that meet the expectations of gamers and advanced users alike.

Pokdepinion: Not the first time a manufacturer got caught cheating, and probably won’t be the last.

Makers of the popular 3DMark benchmarking software UL Solutions has recently confirmed the delisting of two smartphones –…

[6
111,139,69,145
0":"post-374818","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-technology","8":"tag-new-zealand","9":"tag-newzealand","10":"tag-nz","11":"tag-technology
["GET
