Cyclone Vaianu bore down on New Zealand<\/a>, Whakat\u0101ne District Council issued warnings that coastal areas were likely to face evacuations.<\/p>\nYesterday, after hearing these, the Karts took precautions including parking their motorhome at a friend\u2019s place partway between \u014chope and Whakat\u0101ne, \u201cjust in case we had to get out during the night\u201c.<\/p>\n
At about 9.30am this morning, they decided it was time to get out of \u014chope.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe wind just suddenly picked up and we were like, we need to get out before the trees come down and we\u2019re stuck.\u201d<\/p>\n
The evacuation centre seems like the safest place they can be in at the moment, they said.<\/p>\n
But even there, \u201cit still feels like everything\u2019s shaking when the wind picks up and you think it [the motorhome] is going to roll over\u201d.<\/p>\n

Kylee Kast received an alert from Spark saying their internet was out, \u201cso that tells me that our power\u2019s out\u201d.<\/p>\n
But other than that, they don\u2019t know anything about the state of their house.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur house is on the beach side of the road, hopefully with the tide and the cyclone hitting at the same time, hopefully there\u2019s no water in our house.\u201d<\/p>\n
