Point and shoot cameras are making a\u00a0comeback, reviving a digital age already in the past.<\/p>\n

There has been a steady rise in popularity of the\u00a0early 2000s staple in the past few years among\u00a0Gen\u00a0Z.<\/p>\n

Digital cameras have become a key\u00a0item\u00a0of any student party and are\u00a0highly sought-after\u00a0online,\u00a0with reseller prices spiking\u00a0with\u00a02500\u00a0Trade\u00a0Me listings.<\/p>\n

Popular models like the Sony\u00a0Cyber-Shot in good condition can go for\u00a0more than\u00a0$1000 on\u00a0Trade\u00a0Me,\u00a0more than\u00a0four times their original value\u00a0of\u00a0$250\u00a0in the early 2000s.<\/p>\n

The Sony cyber-shot camera model made waves in the 2000s before it became the most wanted camera by Gen Z today.<\/p>\n

A\u00a02008\u00a0Oprah.com<\/a> article by Farah Miller called\u00a0the cyber-shot a must-have for planning any “21st-Century Bash”.<\/p>\n

Searches for point-and-shoots on\u00a0Google have been increasing since 2020, spiking in December 2024 and the same month in 2025 as digicams prove to be one of the most popular Christmas gifts for Gen z.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, digital camera reselling accounts on platforms like Instagram and Facebook marketplace have gained thousands of followers.<\/p>\n

A Christchurch resident,\u00a0who is\u00a0referred\u00a0to as\u00a0Sav,\u00a0saw this gap in the New Zealand market and created an Instagram digital camera reselling account, gaining more than 2000 followers since its\u00a0initial\u00a0launch.<\/p>\n

Sav sources cameras through vintage shops and op shops as well as second hand markets, testing and cleaning all the cameras before listing them on Instagram to keep up with the hype.<\/p>\n

“[Thrifted.pix\u00a0has]\u00a0grown really quickly, especially over the past year with a strong response from\u00a0Gen\u00a0Z\u00a0who love the nostalgic look and feel of digicams.”<\/p>\n

“I think the growth really reflects how people are moving towards more intentional ‘imperfect’ photography and wanting something different than smartphones,” said Sav.<\/p>\n
