Violet Grohl has taken aim at male musicians with \u201cattitude problems\u201d.<\/p>\n
READ MORE:\u00a0Urgent action required to tackle \u201cendemic\u201d misogyny faced by women in music<\/a><\/p>\n The 19-year-old singer-songwriter, daughter of Foo Fighters<\/a>\u2018\u00a0Dave Grohl<\/a>, recently spoke to\u00a0The Forty-Five<\/a>\u00a0about her upcoming debut album, \u2018Be Sweet To Me\u2019<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 out May 29 via Auroura Records\/Republic\/Island.<\/p>\n One of the record\u2019s tracks, \u2018Cool Buzz\u2019, takes aim at the hypocrisy of men in the hardcore scene, who Violet said hide behind a progressive veneer, but don\u2019t welcome women into their spaces.<\/p>\n \u201cIt still feels like an exclusive scene,\u201d she said. \u201cEspecially when you wanna listen to really hardcore shit and run around and mosh, there\u2019s a lot of \u2018Oh, you\u2019re too delicate, you\u2019re too feminine, this isn\u2019t your place.<\/p>\n \u201cBut I do wanna be in that space, and I know there are a lot of other girls who want to be there too. So I think more girls should make punk music, if these spaces aren\u2019t gonna allow it.\u201d<\/p>\n Elsewhere in the conversation, she touched on being dismissed as a \u201cnepo baby\u201d<\/a> and spoke about the importance of her friendships with female musicians, in particular with Persia Numan (daughter of synth-pop legend Gary Numan<\/a>), who she collaborated with on \u2018What\u2019s Heaven Without You\u2019.<\/p>\n Having spoken warmly about her kinship with Persia Numan and Dora Jar<\/a>, Grohl then said turned her attention to her male peers, saying: \u201cI don\u2019t like male musicians my age.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t care,\u201d she continued. \u201cThey have attitude problems. They\u2019ve been saying this about us for so fucking long \u2013 it\u2019s time that they sit down, be quiet and play their music.<\/p>\n \u201cThe best advice I\u2019ve been given is that it\u2019s OK to say no or that you don\u2019t want to do something,\u201d she said. \u201cFor a lot of women, it took them a really long time to accept and implement that into their lives. It\u2019s inspiring to be around the kinds of people who don\u2019t give a fuck and will say whatever they feel.\u201d<\/p>\n In the same interview, Grohl \u2013 who was recently added to the line-up for Reading & Leeds 2026<\/a> \u2013 urged her doubters to attend her shows, saying: \u201cCome listen to my music and then you can decide for yourself if I\u2019m worthy of this career or not. This is my passion, this is my thing, and it\u2019s all I want to do.\u201d<\/p>\n She also recalled performing with the surviving members of Nirvana<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Dave, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear \u2013\u00a0at the Fire Aid benefit concert in LA<\/a>\u00a0last year.<\/p>\n Violet looked back on when she first realised she wanted a music career, saying: \u201cIt was around the time I started singing backing vocals for my Dad. It was such a crazy experience.\u201d<\/p>\n She also spoke about how she had been \u201cfollowing\u00a0Billie Eilish<\/a>\u00a0since the beginning\u201d, adding: \u201cWatching her open up this path for female musicians in this alternative pop space that\u2019s still beautiful, it was just so incredible to me.\u201d<\/p>\n Violet\u00a0began hitting the road with Foo Fighters in 2018<\/a>, providing backing vocals at numerous gigs. She performed with them at the\u00a0tribute concerts<\/a>\u00a0held for late Foos drummer\u00a0Taylor Hawkins<\/a>\u00a0in 2022, too, and featured on the band\u2019s\u00a02023 song \u2018Show Me How\u2019<\/a>. Violet\u00a0appeared with Foo Fighters at that year\u2019s Glastonbury to perform the track<\/a>.<\/p>\n She\u00a0released a cover version of \u2018Nausea\u2019, originally by Los Angeles punks X, alongside her father Dave<\/a> in 2021.\u00a0The Foos frontman\u00a0credited his daughters for introducing him to Eilish in 2019<\/a>. Then, in 2022,\u00a0Dave said Violet and her generation would \u201ccreate the next revolution\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n Later in the new interview, Violet discussed deciding that she wanted to focus on \u201calternative rock music\u201d for her own project, after teaming up with producer Justin Raisen (Kim Gordon<\/a>,\u00a0Charli XCX<\/a>,\u00a0Sky Ferreira<\/a>).<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s what felt right to me at that time of my life,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd we just had this weird telepathic thing.\u201d<\/p>\n Dave previously\u00a0expressed his desire to appear on Violet\u2019s first album<\/a>. Earlier this year,\u00a0he revealed that he had \u201cno idea\u201d that his daughter had signed a record deal until she told him at dinner<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cShe made this album with a producer named Justin Raisen, and she did it on her own,\u201d he explained. \u201cShe met the producer, and they would go to the studio every day and she would send me songs when she was finished. But I had absolutely nothing to do with this record at all.\u201d<\/p>\n He added: \u201cSo, I\u2019m totally uninvolved. I\u2019m the dad who wants to be there and know everything. And she\u2019s just totally doing her own thing. It\u2019s amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n Violet signed a major record deal at the start of this year, and shared the songs \u2018Thum\u2019 and \u2018Applefish\u2019<\/a>. In March, she released the single\u00a0\u2018595\u2019<\/a>, which was\u00a0\u201cinspired by a vintage t-shirt advertising a phone sex line\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n The singer is yet to announce any UK headline dates in support of the forthcoming \u2018Be Sweet To Me\u2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Violet Grohl has taken aim at male musicians with \u201cattitude problems\u201d.
