Ye could probably benefit from a few more Michael Che<\/a>-like personalities in his life. <\/p>\n

Footage from a new documentary shows a tense exchange between Ye (formerly known as Kanye West<\/a>) and Che after the rapper\u2019s infamous rant<\/a> on \u201cSaturday Night Live<\/a>\u201d in 2018. <\/p>\n

In 2018, Ye performed on the long-running sketch show as its musical guest. Shortly after his final song, the \u201cRunaway\u201d rapper essentially took the show and its audience hostage to deliver a rambling pro-President Donald Trump<\/a> and anti-Democrat diatribe while wearing a MAGA hat. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t be controlled by monolithic thoughts,\u201d Ye said at one point<\/a>. \u201cYou can\u2019t always have, every time you have a Black subject matter, like [Bill] Cosby, that you have to have a Black comedian talking about him.\u201d <\/p>\n

According to a now-viral clip from Nico Ballesteros\u2019s new Ye-centered doc, \u201cIn Whose Name,\u201d Che took issue with this specific remark and swiftly confronted Ye backstage after the rapper wrapped up his tirade.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou good with me? For real?\u201d Che can be seen asking Ye in the clip. \u201cI\u2019m the Black comedian, I made a joke about Cosby.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cAw, man, I love you, though, bro,\u201d the \u201cGold Digger\u201d rapper said meekly.<\/p>\n

But Che refused to back down. \u201cWhy would you do that to me? I work here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ye went on to claim that he was referring to \u201cSNL\u201d alum Leslie Jones, not to Che, during his remarks about Black comedians. <\/p>\n

But Che wasn\u2019t buying it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI work here. Like, come on, man. We treat everyone that come in like family, and you gonna sell us out? Like, that\u2019s fucked up, man,\u201d he said. \u201cWe look up to you, we love you. What you got against us?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, I do have some things against \u2018SNL,\u2019\u201d Ye admitted.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s cool,\u201d Che said. \u201cBut airing it out like that without letting us be able to reply is kind of foul. You wait until the last song and then say that foul shit to us?\u201d<\/p>\n

At this point, rapper Consequence \u2014 who was watching the confrontation unfold \u2014 tries to break it up. <\/p>\n

Che later turns to Ye before the clip cuts out, and says: \u201cYo, you\u2019re a hero to us, man! We love you. Seriously, we love you. But it\u2019s foul to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

On social media platforms like X and TikTok, users were impressed by Che\u2019s calm but firm demeanor during the confrontation. <\/p>\n

\u201cI respect Michael Che even more now!\u201d another TikToker agreed. \u201cToo many people don\u2019t call kanye out for his nonsense.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYe was shook \ud83d\ude2d\u201d another TikToker noted.<\/p>\n

I have no idea what they are talking about. But I do like when someone doesn\u2019t lack the courage of their convictions. He came at him respectfully.<\/p>\n

Y\u2019all see this I\u2019m a tell you why I like this interaction because this is how we talk to each other when we have a disagreement. Most of the world wanted to pick this is violent but this is how we talk to each other. There was no violence involved. It was peaceful.<\/p>\n

Other \u201cSNL\u201d stars and alums who were present for Ye\u2019s rant have spoken about it in retrospect.<\/p>\n

During the \u201cLadies & Gentlemen\u202650 Years of SNL Music\u201d special that aired in January, Ego Nwodim recalled that the Ye incident happened during her very first broadcast, when she was stuck onstage. <\/p>\n

\u201cI moved to New York exactly eight days prior for this job,\u201d she said, per Entertainment Weekly<\/a>. \u201cI was like, \u2018I don\u2019t wanna be up here for this, and I don\u2019t agree with this, and standing up here looks like I\u2019m standing in solidarity.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Kenan Thompson also admitted to leaving the stage when he realized the rapper was about to pull some kind of stunt.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen he grabbed the mic and was just wandering around, you could see that he was gearing up to say something. I was like, \u2018I\u2019m out!\u2019\u201d Thompson recalled in the special. \u201cIt would have been cool if he just had did the music thing, and, I don\u2019t know, just spoke through the hat, I guess, \u2019cause the hat was loud.\u201d<\/p>\n
