{"id":379194,"date":"2026-04-14T15:58:21","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T15:58:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/379194\/"},"modified":"2026-04-14T15:58:21","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T15:58:21","slug":"wairoa-mayor-craig-little-stands-firm-on-not-declaring-woke-state-of-emergency-in-cyclone-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/379194\/","title":{"rendered":"Wairoa mayor Craig Little stands firm on not declaring &#8216;woke&#8217; state of emergency in cyclone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/4K5BNHE_Craig_Little_jpg.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"700\" alt=\"Mayor of Wairoa Craig Little\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nWairoa District mayor Craig Little.<br \/>\nPhoto: Nick Monro\n<\/p>\n<p>Declaring a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/483260\/explainer-what-is-a-state-of-emergency-and-who-can-call-it\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">state of emergency<\/a> should be the last tool used in the toolbox &#8211; not the first.<\/p>\n<p>Those are the words of Wairoa District mayor Craig Little after he chose not to join Hawke&#8217;s Bay Regional Council, Napier, Hastings, and Central Hawke&#8217;s Bay councils in declaring a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/ldr\/592203\/hawke-s-bay-mayor-says-he-refused-state-of-emergency-for-cyclone-vaianu-calls-response-woke\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">local state of emergency during Cyclone Vaianu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Little later told local Democracy Reporting: &#8220;We&#8217;re becoming woke as a country when it comes to states of emergency.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Christopher Luxon hit back at Little&#8217;s comment &#8211; saying he is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/592226\/christopher-luxon-hits-back-at-wairoa-mayor-craig-little-over-woke-comment\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">happy to be labelled woke<\/a> if it means New Zealanders are not losing their lives.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Morning Report, Little said Wairoa has been through disasters before and suffered greatly in the wake of Cyclone Gabrielle.<\/p>\n<p>For this event, calling a state of emergency before it even hit simply wasn&#8217;t necessary, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Little said his district was well prepared for the weather event and forecasts were being watched closely.<\/p>\n<p>The cyclone was downgraded as it approached New Zealand and was considered a &#8220;low rain event&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>From the intel he had, &#8220;we didn&#8217;t require it&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Little said calling a state of emergency causes panic amongst people &#8211; &#8220;there&#8217;s no doubt about it&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>But he said he was confident Wairoa would be safe &#8211; and if it was necessary, he would have called a state of emergency when it was needed.<\/p>\n<p>The decision not to declare was made by not just himself, but agreed upon by elected members of the council.<\/p>\n<p>Little said residents were well aware of what was going on and a number of media releases and social media posts were shared.<\/p>\n<p>Hindsight was a wonderful thing, Little said, and a state of emergency had not been needed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I believe it&#8217;s the last tool in the toolbox to use &#8211; not the first.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/radionz.us6.list-manage.com\/subscribe?u=211a938dcf3e634ba2427dde9&amp;id=b3d362e693\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for Ng\u0101 Pitopito K\u014drero<\/a>, a daily newsletter curated by our editors and delivered straight to your inbox every weekday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Wairoa District mayor Craig Little.
