{"id":380675,"date":"2026-04-15T12:49:13","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T12:49:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/380675\/"},"modified":"2026-04-15T12:49:13","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T12:49:13","slug":"christ-gantenbein-unveils-design-for-dongjak-art-space","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/380675\/","title":{"rendered":"Christ &#038; Gantenbein unveils design for Dongjak Art Space"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sun, wind and rain will be encouraged to enter the towering timber <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/pavilions-tag\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pavilion<\/a> that defines Dongjak Art Space, which architecture studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/christ-gantenbein\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Christ &amp; Gantenbein<\/a> is designing in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/Seoul\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Seoul<\/a>, South Korea.<\/p>\n<p>Set to open in 2028, the 30-metre-high structure will sit alongside a subterranean gallery and offer an adaptable exhibition and events space for a residential neighbourhood in the Dongjak District.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2316136 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/dongjak-art-space-christ-gantenbein-architecture-cultural-seoul-south-korea-pavilions_dezeen_2364_co.jpeg\" alt=\"Dongjak Art Space by Christ &amp; Gantenbein\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Christ &amp; Gantenbein has designed an arts centre for Seoul<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christgantenbein.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Christ &amp; Gantenbein<\/a>, Dongjak Art Space is being designed as a recognisable landmark that will transform the neighbourhood into a cultural hub with international appeal.<\/p>\n<p>The pavilion will take the form of a tapering timber tower that is at once sheltered from and open to the sky, which the studio said aims to balance a feeling of &#8220;openness and inward focus&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2316141 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776257350_956_dongjak-art-space-christ-gantenbein-architecture-cultural-seoul-south-korea-pavilions_dezeen_2364_co.jpeg\" alt=\"Towering timber pavilion interior\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>It will be defined by a towering timber pavilion<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Seen from a distance, the project emerges among the trees as a vertical figure rising above the landscape,&#8221; said the studio.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Its distinct character lies in its dual spatial condition: at once open and enclosed, interior and exterior. This ambiguity allows for a wide range of uses, accommodating conversations, concerts, meetings, dining and performances, as well as moments of stillness,&#8221; it continued.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It also enables a direct relationship with the elements, where rain, sunlight, snow and wind become part of the experience.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2316138 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776257351_916_dongjak-art-space-christ-gantenbein-architecture-cultural-seoul-south-korea-pavilions_dezeen_2364_co.jpeg\" alt=\"Dongjak Art Space by Christ &amp; Gantenbein\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The pavilion will sit alongside an entrance to a subterranean hall<\/p>\n<p>Commissioned by district mayor Ilha Park, Dongjak Art Space has been developed by Christ &amp; Gantenbein in collaboration with the local community.<\/p>\n<p>According to the studio, its design draws on local &#8220;architectural traditions, particularly the open courtyards of the hanok&#8221; \u2013 a traditional Korean house with a central courtyard.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/04\/10\/centre-pompidou-hanwha-wilmotte-associes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/centre-pompidou-hanwha-wilmotte-associes-seoul-sq_dezeen_2364_col_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Centre Pompidou Hanwha by Wilmotte &amp; Associ\u00e9s\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Visuals of Centre Pompidou Hanwha in Seoul revealed ahead of opening\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The renders reveal the timber pavilion rising above a grassy garden, wrapped in elongated tiles. Alongside it will sit the entrance to the large flexible hall, which will be nestled underground.<\/p>\n<p>Formed from concrete that will be left exposed, this hall will be used for everything from exhibitions and performances to social events and gatherings.
