Haane film tells story of 28th M\u0101ori Battalion soldier Haane Manahi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img  alt=\"Sergeant Haane Manahi of the Maori Battalion was recommended for the Victoria Cross for bravery during World War II but instead received the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM).\" class=\"article-media__image responsively-lazy\" data-test-ui=\"article-media__image\"\/>Sergeant Haane Manahi of the Maori Battalion was recommended for the Victoria Cross for bravery during World War II but instead received the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM).<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">For his bravery, Manahi was recommended for a Victoria Cross that year by four Allied generals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">The award was later mysteriously downgraded to a Distinguished Conduct Medal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Manahi died in 1986 and was buried at Muruika cemetery in \u014chinemutu.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">In 2006 it was decided that Manahi would not be awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously despite supporters lobbying the Government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">The request was turned down by the Queen, adhering to King George\u2019s 1949 decision that no further awards from World War II should be considered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Instead, in 2007, the then Duke of York, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor (formerly Prince Andrew), presented Manahi\u2019s sons with a special citation for bravery, an altar cloth, a letter from the Queen and a sword in recognition of his actions on Takrouna Ridge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Manahi\u2019s wh\u0101nau hope the new film will result in him finally receiving the Victoria Cross, RNZ reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Niece Dr Donna Morrison told RNZ that during his lifetime Manahi did not want the VC reinstated as he \u201cdidn\u2019t want to fuss and bother\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHe thought everyone who went away deserved the VC. That was the man that he was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">She hoped King Charles would consider restoring the VC to her uncle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cPerhaps the film will help to speed that process up,\u201d she told RNZ.<\/p>\n<p>A film \u2018beyond the controversy\u2019 <\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Sgt. Haane film director Tearepa Kahi and actor Alex Tarrant, who plays Manahi, spoke to the Rotorua Daily Post ahead of the premiere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Kahi said he was approached by Morrison and her son Anaru Grant to do the film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe M\u0101ori Battalion story is the crown jewel of all M\u0101ori stories in recent memory. Because it\u2019s a historic story, there\u2019s a lot of weight attached to it. It\u2019s not like anybody can help themselves to this story \u2013 you have to be invited into the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Manahi\u2019s descendants featured in the film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Kahi said Manahi had become \u201csynonymous\u201d with the Victoria Cross recommendation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe wanted to go beyond the controversy and get to what it was he truly accomplished up there &#8230; \u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">The film\u2019s \u201cheadquarters\u201d revolved around two important sites on \u014chinemutu marae \u2013 inside the wharenui and Manahi\u2019s resting place at Muruika cemetery. <\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Other Rotorua film locations included Pukeroa and the maunga of Ngongotah\u0101 \u2013 a \u201csymbol\u201d B Company soldiers carried with them, he said.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Tearepa Kahi wrote and directed the film Sgt. Photo \/ Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Kahi said the crew shot part of the film in Rotorua on Anzac Day last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThat\u2019s the first time in the history of M\u0101oridom that there were no members of the M\u0101ori Battalion left to join the ranks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Sir Robert (Bom) Gillies, who was the last surviving member of the 28th M\u0101ori Battalion, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/rotorua-daily-post\/news\/sir-robert-bom-gillies-the-last-28th-maori-battalion-soldier-from-rotorua-dies-age-99\/EFZJ5XYR3BATLESLH2NTGXBQTM\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/rotorua-daily-post\/news\/sir-robert-bom-gillies-the-last-28th-maori-battalion-soldier-from-rotorua-dies-age-99\/EFZJ5XYR3BATLESLH2NTGXBQTM\/\">died in November 2024<\/a> aged 99.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Kahi said that in Tunisia, Manahi was fighting alongside his cousins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI also suspect, because he was so well-trained back in Rotorua by his elders &#8230; that\u2019s why he was able to make such a huge imprint in terms of his service during battle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHis significance reigns supreme because he is the only figure in M\u0101oridom that has a pou tokomanawa [centre ridge pole] inside the wharenui \u2013 that is a true depiction of his valour and his courage that\u2019s been committed to a carving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Kahi said Manahi was considered a hero because he \u201cgave his all and more and asked for nothing in return\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt\u2019s our ongoing opportunity and commitment to remember their deeds and to continue to honour them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Alex Tarrant plays the 28th M\u0101ori Battalion soldier Haane Manahi in the film Sgt. Photo \/ Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Tarrant said he felt \u201cpure anticipation for a passion project to come to the light\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">On playing the film\u2019s lead, Tarrant said it was a cliche to call it an honour, \u201cbut that is the truth\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI think there\u2019s a lot of imposter syndrome that came with the acceptance of this role but as we started filming and progressing through the shooting schedule, it started to become more clear that everyone who was cast was exactly where they were meant to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Tarrant said the shoot was \u201cfast and furious\u201d, which he enjoyed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe biggest highlight was getting to work with other like-minded, eager, passionate creatives both behind the camera and in front of the camera and I think that\u2019s what made it really, really special.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI look at the descendants of Haane and all of his cousins, and I can trust that when the film comes out, they will be extremely proud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">The Sgt. Haane Rotorua premiere is invitation-only.
