{"id":382031,"date":"2026-04-16T06:22:27","date_gmt":"2026-04-16T06:22:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/382031\/"},"modified":"2026-04-16T06:22:27","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T06:22:27","slug":"miami-beachs-bass-museum-picks-architect-for-new-pavilion-the-art-newspaper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/382031\/","title":{"rendered":"Miami Beach\u2019s Bass Museum picks architect for new pavilion &#8211; The Art Newspaper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/keywords\/bass-museum-of-art\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bass Museum of Art<\/a> in Miami Beach has selected the Los Angeles-based architecture firm Johnston Marklee to lead its forthcoming expansion, which will see a new pavilion built on 22,000 sq. ft of space currently used for parking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The firm is <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.johnstonmarklee.com\/work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">well versed<\/a> in museum expansion and renovation projects, having converted Roy Lichtenstein\u2019s former Manhattan studio to house the Whitney Museum of American Art\u2019s <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2022\/02\/23\/roy-lichtenstein-studio-donated-to-whitney-museum\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Independent Study Program<\/a>, built the <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2018\/10\/31\/houstons-museum-building-boom-continues-with-opening-of-menil-drawing-institute\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Menil Drawing Institute<\/a> on the campus of the Menil Collection in Houston, and led a significant renovation of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. The firm has also designed spaces for several Los Angeles galleries including Marian Goodman Gallery, Honor Fraser, Roberts Projects and Various Small Fires.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The firm&#8217;s Bass Museum project will build on the Pritzker Prize-winning architect Arata Isozaki\u2019s 1995 concept for the institution&#8217;s campus in Collins Park, centred around Russell Pancost\u2019s Art Deco pavilion from the 1930s. The museum last underwent a major <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2017\/10\/30\/miami-beachs-bass-reopens-after-dollar12m-makeover-and-a-year-of-delays\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">renovation and expansion in 2015-17,<\/a> which cost $12m and added around 10,000 sq. ft of exhibition and public space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">\u201cWe are thrilled to reimagine the southwest corner of Collins Park for The Bass,\u201d Mark Lee, the firm\u2019s founding partner, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Sharon Johnston, a founding partner at the firm, added: \u201cThrough careful analysis of light and shadow, space and volume, and the surrounding park and urban context, we are planning a transformative project that will increase public access to the museum\u2019s programs and artworks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The project will include three main elements: an elevated gallery to display the museum\u2019s expanding permanent collection while meeting resiliency guidelines in flood-, heat wave- and hurricane-prone South Florida; an outdoor patio with a mix of shaded and exposed areas; and within the patio a stage area for outdoor screenings and events.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">No timeline, preliminary designs or budget for the project have been announced. In November 2022, the museum was <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2022\/11\/10\/bass-museum-municipal-bond-20m-miami-beach-midterm-election-new-wing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">awarded $20.1m<\/a> in city-issued funds as part of a municipal bond authorised by local voters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">\u201cHaving just celebrated our 60th year, we are firmly focused on the future, and this expansion is a vital part of that vision, allowing us to deepen our engagement with artists and our community by creating new, flexible spaces to gather, reflect and experience art in meaningful ways,\u201d Silvia Karman Cubi\u00f1\u00e1, the museum\u2019s executive director, said in a statement. \u201cWe cannot wait to unveil it and to welcome visitors from near and far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The Bass Museum puts on robust year-round programming that puts local, regional national and global artists in dialogue.
