Mel Brooks brought the Farce to CinemaCon<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Brooks didn\u2019t attend the annual convention in Las Vegas, but the 99-year-old comedy legend sent a pre-taped video for the long-awaited sequel to his 1987 sci-fi parody \u201cSpaceballs.\u201d In the short clip, he also announced the sequel\u2019s official title, \u201cSpaceballs: The New One<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The film reunites original cast members Rick Moranis as Lord Dark Helmet, George Wyner as Colonel Sandurz, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, Bill Pullman as Lone Starr and Brooks as the Yoda-esque being Yogurt. Joining the ensemble is Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman and Anthony Carrigan, who take on portray new characters whose identities are being kept secret.<\/p>\n

Moranis, Zuniga, Gad and both Pullmans took the CinemaCon stage to debut the \u201cSpaceballs: The New One\u201d trailer, which spoofed everything from \u201cStar Wars\u201d to \u201cAvatar\u201d to \u201cHarry Potter.\u201d Just like the opening to \u201cThe Force Awakens,\u201d there\u2019s a sandy desert scene with robots and Jedi-like explorers wandering the dunes \u2014 plus someone frozen in carbonite like Han Solo. The sci-fi jokes came fast and quick, including Moranis\u2019 Lord Dark Helmet peeing at a urinal next to a Na\u2019vi from \u201cAvatar.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amazon MGM is being similarly coy about the sequel\u2019s storyline, writing in a release that\u00a0\u201cplot details are being kept under lock, key, and an industrial-strength Schwartz shield.\u201d\u00a0Like the original, the follow-up film will take place in a galaxy very, very, very, very far away and is expected to riff on popular sci-fi franchises including \u201cStar Wars,\u201d \u201cStar Trek\u201d and \u201cAlien.\u201d<\/p>\n

Josh Greenbaum, who is known for \u201cBarb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar\u201d and \u201cWill & Harper,\u201d is directing from a script by Gad, Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. \u201cSpaceballs: The New One\u201d is set to release on April 23, 2027.<\/p>\n

Brooks, who co-wrote and directed the original sci-fi spoof, shared news of the sequel last year with a video in the signature \u201cStar Wars\u201d crawl, which read: \u201cThirty-eight years ago, there was only one \u2018Star Wars\u2019 trilogy. But since then there have been \u2026 a prequel trilogy, a sequel trilogy, a sequel to the prequel, a prequel to the sequel, countless TV spinoffs, a movie spinoff of the TV spinoff, which is both a prequel and a sequel [\u2026] But in 38 years, there has only ever been one \u2018Spaceballs.\u2019 Until now\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
