{"id":383102,"date":"2026-04-16T21:19:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-16T21:19:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/383102\/"},"modified":"2026-04-16T21:19:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T21:19:10","slug":"luxon-facing-leadership-pressure-from-within-party","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/383102\/","title":{"rendered":"Luxon facing leadership pressure from within party"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prime Minister Christopher Luxon&#8217;s leadership is under renewed pressure due to poor polling, it is being reported this morning, with those in his party who believe he should go apparently set to make their move in the coming weeks. <\/p>\n<p>The New Zealand Herald said moves to replace Luxon as National Party leader could happen within the next fortnight.<\/p>\n<p>And Breakfast\u2019s Tova O\u2019Brien has been in contact with a National MP who told her the numbers are probably there to unseat him.<\/p>\n<p>However, the MP told her the preference is for him to stand down rather than for him to be rolled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-greyDarkFaded\">Liam Hehir said there was a group of disgruntled MPs, but they were not Ministers and there was no single leader behind the potential move. There was no desire to take the focus off Finance Minister Nicola Willis and her response to the oil crisis caused by the Iran War.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything other than him [Luxon] stepping down would be a nightmare and he knows that,\u201d the MP said in a text.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvnz.co.nz\/news\/breakfast-str-3cs8ys3wndgesehxyobsljxro5x-1776370636561\/luxon-facing-possible-leadership-challenge-after-bad-polls-in-depth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Luxon facing possible leadership challenge after bad polls &#8211; watch on TVNZ+<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Poor polling is understood to be the driving factor with poor results in recent months threatening the future of National MPs at November\u2019s election and potentially putting the party out of Government.<\/p>\n<p>All eyes will be on the latest 1News Verian poll on Monday evening. In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1news.co.nz\/2026\/02\/16\/poll-hipkins-luxon-neck-and-neck-as-preferred-pm-govt-gets-510\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">last poll in February<\/a>, National was on 34% and Labour on 32%. Luxon\u2019s preferred prime minister rating was just 20%, the same as Labour\u2019s Chris Hipkins.<\/p>\n<p>Party whip<\/p>\n<p>The Herald reported Stuart Smith, MP and party whip, could not contact Luxon during the last sitting of Parliament two weeks ago to communicate the views of National MPs.<\/p>\n<p>But a spokesperson the Prime Minister said: \u201cThe PM has a busy diary, but is always available to MPs. (Source: rnz.co.nz)<\/p>\n<p>Senior MP Chris Bishop, who faced a partial demotion in Luxon\u2019s cabinet reshuffle earlier this month, has previously been rumoured to be behind a potential coup. He told Newstalk ZB this morning there was no coup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not trying to upend the party, that\u2019s not happening. No, there\u2019s no coup happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said to his knowledge there was no one within the party trying to unseat Luxon. (Source: 1News)<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Frustrated non-ministers&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Political commentator Liam Hehir, who was formerly active in the National Party, told Breakfast he was aware of \u201ca group of disgruntled MPs\u201d and \u201cfrustrated non-ministers&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve talked to a couple of people &#8211; not just MPs &#8211; but certainly some MPs. It is true that there is a group of disgruntled MPs who do think this, but there\u2019s a couple of really telling things.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not aware of any of them actually being ministers.
