He said the scheme was a great chance to put his training into practice, as he identified damaged cords and ensured appliances worked as they should.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt gave me hands-on practice testing appliances and learning electrical safety. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt feels good helping the community by reducing waste and providing safe, affordable equipment.\u201d <\/p>\n

Re-Source and Anvil Construction were connected via EarnLearn account manager Julia Carmichael, a long-time supporter of Re-Source. <\/p>\n
\u201cMy involvement with apprentices through Re-Source allows them to gain hands-on experience and valuable evidence for their apprenticeship,\u201d Carmichael said. <\/p>\n
Re-Source founder and general manager Nadine Gaunt said Carmichael saw an opportunity that suited everyone involved.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt provides hands-on experience for apprentices, while helping support our community and sustainability goals.\u201d<\/p>\n
Previously, all testing was carried out by a retired electrician who volunteered his time. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe would have quite a mountain waiting for him, because it\u2019s essential that every electrical item is tested. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis new arrangement with Kees working to test and tag items, under supervision, helps balance the workload and ensures we don\u2019t overwhelm our wonderful volunteers.\u201d<\/p>\n
Re-Source is currently seeking funding so it can buy its own test and tag equipment, with the goal to open the initiative up to other apprentices.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s proving to be an ideal arrangement for everyone. It\u2019s meaningful for the apprentices and hugely helpful for us,\u201d Gaunt said. <\/p>\n
Anvil Construction owners Carla Kilmister and Damian Pitman also saw the benefits for their apprentices to gain further experience. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe work with Re-Source gives Kees a good understanding of plug-in electrical appliances and how they work. They look at what part is faulty and if it easily replaced.\u201d<\/p>\n
Pitman, who previously tested and tagged Hawke\u2019s Bay Hospital equipment, said he knew the importance of the work.<\/p>\n
\u201cTagging and testing really means performing electrical safety checks to make sure the items are safe to handle, and nobody is going to get electrocuted using them.\u201d<\/p>\n
Carmichael said she was working with other electrical apprentices to take part and grow the initiative. <\/p>\n
