BEIJING, April 17 (Reuters) – Apple<\/a>‘s (AAPL<\/a>) iPhone shipments surged 20% in China in the first quarter, for the strongest \u200cgrowth among major vendors, despite an overall decline as rising prices \u200cof memory chips boosted costs, data from Counterpoint Research showed.<\/p>\n

Overall smartphone shipments dropped 4% in the \u200bworld’s largest smartphone market in the period from January to March, hit by supply chain disruptions and the soaring chip prices.<\/p>\n

But China’s two largest smartphone vendors, telecoms giant Huawei and Apple, bucked the trend, reporting growth of 2% and \u200c20% respectively.<\/p>\n

“As most rivals raise \u2060prices, Apple stands out for value, with Chinese consumers knowing its products last at least three years,” Ivan Lam, senior \u2060analyst at Counterpoint Research.<\/p>\n

Huawei’s shipments were lifted by strong demand across both its high-end and budget ranges, including the Enjoy 90 series, giving it a 20% market \u200bshare in \u200bthe quarter, Lam said.<\/p>\n

Huawei retained the \u200btop spot, followed by Apple with \u200ca share of 19%.<\/p>\n

Smartphone<\/a> vendors in China have raised prices for budget handsets to protect margins in the battle with elevated memory chip costs.<\/p>\n

Xiaomi slipped to sixth place with a plunge of 35% in shipments. Lam attributed the sharp decline to a high base effect, after Xiaomi benefited from aggressive price \u200ccuts and government subsidies in the corresponding \u200bperiod last year.<\/p>\n

Shipments by Oppo and Honor also \u200bfell 5% and 3% respectively, \u200bthough Vivo saw a rise of 2%, buoyed by strong \u200csales during the Lunar New Year \u200bholiday.<\/p>\n

Lam expected more \u200bheadwinds for the market in the second quarter, particularly as Chinese brands look to raise prices further.<\/p>\n

“However, we expect Apple and Huawei to fare \u200brelatively better, with Huawei \u200cpotentially seeing further shipment growth driven by solid demand for its \u200blower-end devices,” Lam said.<\/p>\n
