FERNANDINA BEACH – Global instability, rising fuel costs and weakening consumer confidence are beginning to cast uncertainty over the future of tourism on Amelia Island, even as current visitation remains strong.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat happens on the other side of the world does impact us within sometimes hours of it happening,\u201d said Paul Beirnes during a late-March strategic workshop of the Nassau County Tourist Development Council. Beirnes is vice president of the Amelia Island Convention and Visitors Bureau.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cConsumer confidence is starting to quake a little bit,\u201d he added, pointing to early warning signs that economic pressures could influence discretionary travel spending.<\/p>\n
Tourism officials described a destination that is performing well now but facing an increasingly volatile environment heading into the next fiscal year.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe saw\u2026 90% occupancy,\u201d Beirnes said, referencing peak demand during recent spring periods.<\/p>\n
Booking pace for spring and summer also remains solid, but much of the year\u2019s demand has yet to materialize.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cSeventy percent of bookings still have to happen,\u201d he said, cautioning that external factors \u2014 from airline capacity to gas prices \u2014 could still alter travel patterns.<\/p>\n
Those factors are changing quickly.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWho would have imagined that a month ago we would expect the gas to jump from $2.65 to almost $4 (a gallon),\u201d Beirnes said.<\/p>\n
The war with Iran is directly impacting fuel prices and tariffs on imported goods are combining to increase inflation.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
He noted that airlines are already reacting.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnited Airlines trimmed 5% of their schedule due particularly to fuel prices,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
One of the most significant shifts discussed during the workshop is a weakening international travel market, paired with intensifying domestic competition.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cOnly 5.9% of all of our visitation comes internationally,\u201d Beirnes said, describing that as a relative advantage as global travel softens.<\/p>\n
But that shift is forcing U.S. destinations to compete more directly for the same travelers.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cCompetition is about to get fierce \u2014 all caps fierce,\u201d he said. \u201cWe will probably never see the fierceness as we\u2019re going to see in the next year.\u201d<\/p>\n
He pointed to major tourism hubs like Orlando as key competitors pivoting to domestic audiences.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cOrlando alone attracts 74 million visitors every single year,\u201d Beirnes said, noting those destinations are now marketing \u201cwithin our own same backyard.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
The workshop marked the introduction of a new annual strategic session aimed at identifying risks and setting direction for future marketing efforts.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are going to be sharing some of the situational insights, the headwinds\u2026 what we\u2019re seeing, what we\u2019re feeling, our projections,\u201d Beirnes said.<\/p>\n
A central theme was adaptability.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is so true the learnings that we\u2019ve had in the last two years of being able to pivot and adapt\u2026 we are responding to on a regular basis,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n

Officials stressed that future decisions will rely heavily on measurable data.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cAlmost all of our decisions need to be entrenched in some sort of fact and measurement of our metrics,\u201d Beirnes said.<\/p>\n
To support that shift, the tourism bureau has adopted new analytics tools.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe just actually got the contract signed that we will now have access to Placer AI,\u201d he said, describing the platform as providing \u201crich data that we can geo target.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Placer AI is a location analytics platform that uses anonymized mobile device data to track real-world visitor behavior. The system allows officials to see where visitors are coming from, how long they stay and how they move throughout a destination, while also modeling spending patterns and visitation trends. Unlike traditional surveys, the platform provides near real-time insights, enabling tourism officials to measure the effectiveness of marketing campaigns, identify high-value markets and adjust strategies quickly as travel patterns change.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt allows us rich data insights we\u2019ve never had before,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
With international travel expected to remain weak, officials are doubling down on regional markets within driving distance.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cOur sweet spot has always been that southeast United States,\u201d Beirnes said.<\/p>\n
Proximity, he noted, is a competitive advantage.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re four or five or eight hours closer than the Naples or Miami (areas),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
The plan includes targeted campaigns in cities such as Atlanta, Charlotte and Chicago.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re looking to execute a minimum of four geographically targeted activations,\u201d Beirnes said.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Tourism officials also identified opportunities to grow visitation outside peak periods.<\/p>\n
\u201cWeddings\u2026 we really feel is a great opportunity,\u201d Beirnes said.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
He emphasized the need to balance different visitor segments.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou just can\u2019t lean into one or the other,\u201d he said, referring to leisure, group and wedding travel.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Shoulder seasons, including fall and winter events, are also a priority.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need to figure out how we can reach beyond and target the shoulder season,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Tourism industry representatives who sit on the Tourist Development Council at the workshop said demand remains strong, particularly as travelers shift away from international destinations.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are seeing demand,\u201d said Will Worst\u00a0of the Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island.<\/p>\n
He said global tensions are influencing traveler behavior.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople\u2026 don\u2019t want to travel international,\u201d Worst said, adding that travelers are redirecting trips to Florida.<\/p>\n
At the same time, he raised concerns about local factors affecting visitor experience.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI can\u2019t tell you\u2026 it\u2019s such a negative,\u201d he said of downtown paid parking, noting it has changed how some residents and visitors access the area.<\/p>\n
Despite strong current performance, officials are preparing for a plateau in tourism revenue.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe project flat collections for \u201927,\u201d Beirnes said.<\/p>\n
He warned that increased competition could put pressure on room rates.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen the Hilton Head Islands of the world start pulling in at $109, it\u2019ll make us all start shaking with our ADR (average daily rate),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The workshop is part of a broader effort to align tourism strategy with Nassau County\u2019s budget cycle and long-term planning.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have a tremendous amount of work that has to happen between now and next fiscal year,\u201d Beirnes said.<\/p>\n
Officials said they plan to return in June with a more detailed plan for the TDC.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
