Photo \/ AFP<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Traditionally, the All Blacks have been the biggest name in New Zealand sport, winning the World Cup three times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">However, in the past five years support has faded, along with the ABs\u2019 aura.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Poor form under previous coaches Ian Foster and Scott Robertson played a part, but spectators have become more apathetic towards the code in general.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">The shift is most noticeable among the 275,000 people of Pacific origin living in Auckland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">South Auckland is a hotbed of rugby league support, with fervent fandom around sold-out Warriors games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Town centres come to a standstill during international matches featuring Tonga or Samoa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Jones said rugby union had to learn from league and its connection with the Pacific.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIf Pacific rugby is strong, New Zealand rugby is strong,\u201d he said, adding that it would be a \u201ctragedy\u201d if rugby union did not find a way to better cater for Pacific supporters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">He cited rugby union\u2019s \u201carchaic\u201d eligibility rules as a major issue \u201cholding back the ability to really promote the game\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cSamoa and Tonga are really on the periphery of world rugby. That\u2019s not the case in league.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">In rugby union, players can only switch national allegiance after a three-year stand-down, while in league they can change from a tier-one nation like Australia, New Zealand or England to a tier two nation year-on-year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Ken Laban, a rugby league broadcaster and former player, also said the sports were \u201cpoles apart\u201d in how they engage fans, and the Pacific.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI remember the high-profile rugby league figure Phil Gould saying a few years ago that it was his belief that Samoa, Tonga, Fiji and Papua New Guinea should get first pick of players at international level, and England, Australia and the Kiwis should get the last pick,\u201d Laban told AFP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIn large part that\u2019s what we\u2019ve seen and it\u2019s created unbelievable growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Laban said rugby union had \u201cactively prevented that from happening\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Next week the Warriors play the Brisbane Dolphins in Wellington, the match selling out 10 days in advance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">By contrast, the All Blacks have struggled to sell out the same stadium in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Laban said the shift in New Zealand sporting culture was summed up by which sport now leads on national television.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cOnly a few people have picked up on it, but if the Warriors are playing at the same time as Super Rugby, it\u2019s the Warriors playing on Sky Sport 1 on TV.
