{"id":384571,"date":"2026-04-17T18:10:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-17T18:10:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/384571\/"},"modified":"2026-04-17T18:10:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T18:10:07","slug":"connacht-gaa-chiefs-wise-to-pensioner-try-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/384571\/","title":{"rendered":"Connacht GAA chiefs wise to &#8216;pensioner&#8217; try-on"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CONNACHT GAA chief executive John Prenty says people impersonating pensioners at U20 football championship games prompted provincial chiefs to increase the admission price for OAPS.<\/p>\n<p>Admission for over-65s had been \u20ac10 at the U20 group fixtures but recently jumped to \u20ac15 and, speaking on Midwest Radio, Prenty explained the rationale behind the decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe amount of people who came to the gates purporting to be pensioners \u2013 I didn\u2019t realise you could get the pension at about 35,\u201d scoffed Prenty. \u201cA huge amount of people purporting to be pensioners who weren\u2019t pensioners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe ask for ID but what happens is they build up a queue and we just have to let them in. We have never stopped a legitimate pensioner coming in. We let a lot of pensioners in for nothing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Prenty was on \u201cThe Tommy Marren Show\u201d to discuss the council\u2019s decision to charge \u20ac35 for all covered stand tickets at Sunday week\u2019s senior semi-final between Mayo and Roscommon in Castlebar\u2019s Hastings Insurance MacHale Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Prenty explained the Connacht Council have run a deficit the last two years, a combined \u20ac250,000. They only have three senior championship fixtures and need other sources of funding such as the FBD Connacht League.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Gate receipts from the quarter-finals involving London and New York go directly to the host county boards. The province provides grants of \u20ac12,000 and \u20ac50,000 to the teams travelling to the respective cities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Stressing admission is \u20ac5 for juveniles elsewhere in the stadium, Prenty added 3,000 season ticket holders have to be accommodated in the covered stand as well as those for clubs, players\u2019 families and sponsors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Season ticket holders are allocated at either end of the covered stand.
