Photo \/ Mark Mitchell<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe BSA have accepted a raft of new complaints against me and @theplatform_nz,\u201d he wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThey are all from the same person who laid the mumbo jumbo complaint. We will not cooperate in any way with the BSA and do not recognise it has jurisdiction over us or any other non-broadcasters on the internet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Plunket told Media Insider today that he would not be engaging formally with the BSA, or providing recordings. \u201cThe BSA can become a Platform+ subscriber and download any of our excellent content they want from the internet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Amid claims of free-speech being undermined, The Platform\/BSA dispute has forced the Government\u2019s hand into fast-tracking an overhaul of New Zealand\u2019s media regulatory framework, including making a decision on the future of the BSA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">The authority &#8211; established in 1989 to consider complaints about television and radio broadcasts &#8211; earlier this month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/media-insider\/media-insider-broadcasting-standards-authority-v-sean-plunket-and-the-platform-bsa-claims-formal-jurisdiction-over-comment\/premium\/TVS3U5ENWFGXDGJQDTYDS4T4ZQ\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/media-insider\/media-insider-broadcasting-standards-authority-v-sean-plunket-and-the-platform-bsa-claims-formal-jurisdiction-over-comment\/premium\/TVS3U5ENWFGXDGJQDTYDS4T4ZQ\/\">controversially claimed jurisdiction over the online content produced by The Platform and Plunket.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">NZ First and Act want the BSA scrapped and Media and Communications Minister Paul Goldsmith <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/media-insider\/media-insider-media-and-communications-minister-paul-goldsmith-on-the-broadcasting-standards-authority-im-tempted-to-scrap-it\/premium\/XNA7JMUBGBGE7LHEYQ3J4WXTMI\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/media-insider\/media-insider-media-and-communications-minister-paul-goldsmith-on-the-broadcasting-standards-authority-im-tempted-to-scrap-it\/premium\/XNA7JMUBGBGE7LHEYQ3J4WXTMI\/\">has now agreed this is the most likely option.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Goldsmith has indicated that the Media Council &#8211; a self-regulatory industry body which looks after digital, video and newspaper content produced by other media firms &#8211; could replace the BSA. <\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Goldsmith said a decision would be made in the next few months, and before the election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">All of which raises the question of the BSA\u2019s options if its inquiries are somehow held up by Plunket\u2019s position and whether its processes or outcomes are usurped by the Government\u2019s moves on the media regulatory system. <\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">The BSA has been approached for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">In its correspondence to Plunket last night, the BSA outlined the subsequent two formal complaints from the original complainant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">In one of the complaints, the man said being named by Plunket &#8211; and subsequently receiving an abusive email from a listener &#8211; was \u201cpretty frightening\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">He referred to his original complaint about Plunket\u2019s labelling of M\u0101ori tikanga as \u201cmumbo jumbo\u201d, and Plunket\u2019s original response to his complaint about that: \u201cWe are not subject to the broadcasting standards, you plonker\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">The complainant said in a follow-up email complaint to Plunket and now the BSA that the issue had \u201ctaken on a very obvious life of its own when Mr Plunket received advice from the Broadcasting Standards Authority that the authority considers it has jurisdiction&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cMr Plunket was not happy and has launched a strong attack on the authority. But he hasn\u2019t left me out. He delivered a scornful, totally false description of who I am (lefty activist working for an organisation I had never heard of) in the above broadcast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">He also told the BSA that Plunket had \u201cinvited several guests to discuss the BSA covering the internet \u2018issue\u2019, but I believe I was mentioned in various dismissive ways &#8230; through these broadcasts\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">He said that Plunket also \u201cclearly enjoyed repeating the label \u2018plonker\u2019 that he had given me in response to my first complaint\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">He also said Plunket was \u201calmost certainly behind what I describe as a pathetic song &#8230; that clearly is about ridiculing the BSA and me\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cMr Plunket attempted to give some kind of message to his followers to ease off their attacks\/abuse directed at me. But he couldn\u2019t even get that right as he chose to describe me as \u2018someone with issues\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">Plunket said today the complainant was active online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"npuzLaxKHxgCDhG\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHe has made numerous personal attacks on me online. I\u2019ve invited him on to The Platform to express his opinions, he has refused.
