Molly Shannon recalled Will Ferrell\u2019s \u201cdark,\u201d 30-year-old prediction about technology and actors on \u201cJimmy Kimmel Live!\u201d Thursdsay, admitting at the time that she thought he was \u201ccrazy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, with the rise of artificial intelligence and AI performers like Tilly Norwood<\/a>, the actress said that her former \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d co-star may\u2019ve been onto something. Specifically, during her appearance on ABC\u2019s late night show, Shannon praised Ferrell as \u201cgenuine,\u201d \u201cvery intelligent\u201d and a \u201cdeep thinker.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOne night when we were at \u2018SNL,\u2019 we had just started and I was so excited like, \u2018Oh my god, this job\u2019s so great.\u2019 And Will was kind of dark and he was like, \u2018I don\u2019t know. Who knows how long this is going to last?\u2019\u201d she shared. \u201cThis was 30 years ago. He goes, \u2018I just think it\u2019s not going to last long and I think actors are eventually going to be replaced by robots and they\u2019re not going to need human actors anymore.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cAnd I was like, \u2018What are you crazy? You\u2019re being so dark.\u2019 And he was like, \u2018No, I really think they\u2019re not going to [need us]. We\u2019re going to be replaced by robots. They won\u2019t need humans.\u2019 And I thought he was crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shannon said that she and Ferrell \u201cdie laughing about it now,\u201d because the comedic legend \u201cwas right.\u201d <\/p>\n

The \u201cSuperstar\u201d actress\u2019 comments come as many in Hollywood have denounced the growing use of AI in the industry, with Scarlett Johansson, Cate Blanchett and nearly 800 other creatives condemning big tech in an anti-AI campaign earlier this year.<\/p>\n

The A-list stars, including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bonnie Raitt, Chaka Khan, Common, Cyndi Lauper, Questlove, R.E.M., Vince Gilligan and One Republic, lent their signatures to the \u201cStealing Isn\u2019t Innovation\u201d campaign<\/a>, which demanded that work from humans shouldn\u2019t be used by AI without permission.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmerica\u2019s creative community is the envy of the world and creates jobs, economic growth and exports,\u201d\u00a0the campaign\u2019s message stated in January. \u201cBut rather than respect and protect this valuable asset, some of the biggest tech companies, many backed by private equity and other funders, are using American creators\u2019 work to build AI platforms without authorization or regard for copyright law.\u201d<\/p>\n

The statement went on: \u201cArtists, writers and creators of all kinds are banding together with a simple message: Stealing our work is not innovation. It\u2019s not progress. It\u2019s theft \u2013 plain and simple.\u201d<\/p>\n
