{"id":386175,"date":"2026-04-18T18:02:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-18T18:02:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/386175\/"},"modified":"2026-04-18T18:02:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-18T18:02:07","slug":"asa-complaints-over-new-horror-movie-ads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/386175\/","title":{"rendered":"ASA Complaints Over New Horror Movie Ads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">A poster for <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/lee-cronins-the-mummy-review\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lee Cronin&#8217;s The Mummy<\/a> has drawn complaints for its depiction of a female child\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Transport for London, which runs the tube and bus stations in the capital of England, confirmed to <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2026\/04\/16\/tfl-commuters-disgusted-lee-cronins-mummy-poster-depicting-dead-child-27998734\/\" class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Metro<\/a> that it had received an undisclosed number of complaints from commuters.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">The Mummy, from Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin, has a number of advertisements running across London that depict eight-year-old Katie Cannon (played by Natalie Grace), who goes missing for eight years before returning as a mummy. The poster shows Grace as Cannon in mummified form, grey and gaunt.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Earlier this week, BBC journalist and broadcaster Samira Ahmed took to X \/ Twitter to say she had submitted a complaint to the UK\u2019s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) about the poster, saying: \u201cWhy is there so little consideration of the impact of such images on children? (And one might add, on bereaved parents).\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\" lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Just submitted my complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority about this poster ad at tube stations. Why is there so little consideration of the impact of such images on children? It received a mix of comments, with some agreeing with the complaint, others taking issue with it. Journalist Rebecca Reid echoed Ahmed\u2019s sentiment, saying: \u201cThis absolutely terrified my three-year-old last week. No fast food, no women wearing sheer tights, but horror is fine?\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">\u201cIt\u2019s a photo-realistic image of a child corpse,\u201d another person said. \u201cIf people can\u2019t understand how that might be distressing, it says far more about their brain rot than anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">TfL told Metro that all advertising that runs on its estate must comply with the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) code and the TfL Advertising Policy. Metro said that it expects the posters will be removed soon as the advertising campaign comes to an end, given The Mummy is now out.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">The ASA confirmed it had received complaints asking if the ads were unsuitable for children and, according to Metro, those complaints are being looked at to see if an investigation should be launched. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asa.org.uk\/advice-online\/fear-and-distress.html\" class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">The ASA&#8217;s rules<\/a> dictate that adverts &#8220;must not cause fear or distress without justifiable reason; if it can be justified, the fear or distress should not be excessive. Marketers should not use a shocking claim or image merely to attract attention.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">IGN\u2019s <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/lee-cronins-the-mummy-review\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lee Cronin\u2019s The Mummy Review<\/a> returned a 7\/10.
