{"id":386177,"date":"2026-04-18T18:06:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-18T18:06:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/386177\/"},"modified":"2026-04-18T18:06:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-18T18:06:11","slug":"dont-miss-the-moon-venus-and-the-pleiades-align-after-sunset-on-april-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/386177\/","title":{"rendered":"Don&#8217;t miss the moon, Venus and the Pleiades align after sunset on April 19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-b84f7a26-0bc6-4163-80c4-f635b7f645c0\">Look to the western sky about 30-90 minutes after sunset on April 19 for a fleeting but incredible sight, as the razor-thin crescent moon shines above the Pleiades open star cluster and Venus in the early spring sky.<\/p>\n<p>The upturned 11%-lit <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">waxing crescent moon<\/a> will shine approximately 20 degrees above the western horizon \u2014 the width of two clenched fists held at arm&#8217;s length \u2014 just two days after the new moon on April 17.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-b84f7a26-0bc6-4163-80c4-f635b7f645c0-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">A cluster of stars surrounded by a diffuse glow should be visible to the lower right of the thin lunar crescent. (Image credit: Created in Canva Pro)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-f50c3fdd-134c-46d5-aaa9-09c6f2bb89d8\">The ice giant <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/45-uranus-seventh-planet-in-earths-solar-system-was-first-discovered-planet.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/45-uranus-seventh-planet-in-earths-solar-system-was-first-discovered-planet.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/45-uranus-seventh-planet-in-earths-solar-system-was-first-discovered-planet.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Uranus<\/a> will lurk 5 degrees to the upper right of Venus at a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21640-star-luminosity-and-magnitude.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21640-star-luminosity-and-magnitude.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21640-star-luminosity-and-magnitude.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">magnitude<\/a>, or brightness, of just +5.8, making it almost impossible to spot with the naked eye. Its proximity to the horizon will make it even more challenging to spot on the evening of April 19. However, a pair of binoculars or a telescope may allow you to resolve its tiny greenish disk hanging in the blackness of space.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-8163604d-d5d9-4662-8395-8110124cf618\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Celestron NexStar 8SE deals<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-9c0a0c79-01d0-45f9-94cf-9d84b4993d3f\">You may notice a soft glow illuminating the shadowed side of the lunar disk as it glides silently towards the horizon, as sunlight bounces off <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a>&#8216;s cloudy surface to strike its natural satellite.
