{"id":386270,"date":"2026-04-18T19:48:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-18T19:48:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/386270\/"},"modified":"2026-04-18T19:48:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-18T19:48:10","slug":"dai-henwood-on-51-rounds-of-chemo-losing-the-fear-of-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/386270\/","title":{"rendered":"Dai Henwood on 51 rounds of chemo, losing the fear of death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Comedian Dai Henwood says he\u2019s learning not to fear death as he wages a public cancer battle, including 51 rounds of chemotherapy.<\/p>\n<p>The comic and TV presenter reveals he has also endured eight operations on his lungs, including a procedure to drain three litres of fluid.<\/p>\n<p>The former Lego Masters NZ host spoke candidly about his battle with bowel cancer on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvnz.co.nz\/shows\/between-two-beers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Between Two Beers<\/a> podcast, which is available on the TVNZ+ platform.<\/p>\n<p>Henwood, 48, was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in 2020 but did not disclose the diagnosis publicly until 2023.<\/p>\n<p>His recent 51st round of chemotherapy had proved to be the hardest yet, he told podcast hosts Steve Holloway and Seamus Marten.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That was the hardest I\u2019ve ever had in my life,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt takes such a heavy mental toll and physical toll that it takes a while to come out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Henwood described the surgeries as \u201cpretty hectic &#8211; that\u2019s a lot of trauma for your body to go through\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The comedian said undergoing chemotherapy was physically and mentally gruelling, but after his latest treatment he was \u201cfeeling great to be honest\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Henwood said he was now taking the targeted cancer drug Cetuximab, which had helped to shrink tumours in his lungs and to ease his breathing.<\/p>\n<p>He was also considering applying for clinical trials in both New Zealand and Australia but stressed his current standard of care was still working.<\/p>\n<p>Henwood also revealed that he purchased health insurance while at a barbecue two years before his cancer was diagnosed and he was \u201cblessed\u2019 with the medical care he had received.<\/p>\n<p>He has a university degree in Eastern religions and during his cancer journey he said he had overcome the fear of dying.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho knows when it\u2019s going to happen but the fear of it is gone \u2026 now it\u2019s just the joy of living,\u201d he told the podcast.<\/p>\n<p>The father of two was asked how to explain a cancer diagnosis and treatment to his children and said: \u201cHonesty and small timeframes.
