Big week for popes<\/a>: LA indie rockers Pope are back with new singles from their upcoming record BFM. The band released “John Thomas” and “Sick Minute” yesterday, and the latter features Julia Steiner of Ratboys fame.<\/p>\n

“‘Sick Minute’ is about trying your hardest, just because it\u2019s always good to give it your best shot,”\u00a0bandleader Matt Seferian says. “That there\u2019s something super special about giving it all you got. That you\u2019re not replaceable and that no one can be you, so don\u2019t let the haters get to you.”<\/p>\n

“‘John Thomas’ was inspired by the song ‘Possibilities’ by the Glands,\u201d adds\u00a0Alex Skalany, continuing:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Matt and I love a lot of lo-fi music, and more low-key tender moments on albums. I sent Matt that song and said I wish we had a song like this on the record. Wrote this in an attempt to create a moment like that on this record, and it turned out to be a personal favorite on the record. We used acoustic guitar and drum machines, and there’s a little bit of electric, too. We tried to keep it really bedroomy and vibey. Lyrically its about the same sorts of topics that show up throughout the record. Just fatigue and tiredness. The desperation for something different. Living with yourself and your monsters, etc.<\/p>\n

Pope announced BFM, their first album in over eight years, back in February. The new singles follow the previously released “Newboi<\/a>” and “Make You Feel<\/a>.” Check out the new ones below.<\/p>\n
