{"id":386770,"date":"2026-04-19T04:17:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-19T04:17:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/386770\/"},"modified":"2026-04-19T04:17:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T04:17:09","slug":"carlton-breaks-silence-on-elijah-hollands-scandal-as-rumour-swirls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/386770\/","title":{"rendered":"Carlton breaks silence on Elijah Hollands scandal as rumour swirls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Carlton has broken its silence over Elijah Hollands\u2019 behaviour with the football club confessing it was aware during the game the footballer was acting in an unusual way. <\/p>\n<p>Carlton chief executive Graham Wright on Sunday morning said the club is still trying to find answers as to why no action was taken as Hollands appeared to be showing signs of erratic behaviour throughout the night.<\/p>\n<p>Wright described Hollands\u2019 issues as \u201cunprecedented and complex\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were aware that he was struggling in the game and he\u2019s (previously) had &#8230; anxiety and panic attacks,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur guys were dealing with him in the game and obviously knew that he was having some problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wright confirmed the 23-year-old will not travel to Perth for the club\u2019s Round 7 match against Fremantle on Saturday. <\/p>\n<p>He said Hollands is \u201cOK\u201d and has been spending time with family and has been supported by medical staff. <\/p>\n<p>The former Collingwood head of football said the club does not \u201csuspect\u201d Hollands was under the influence of any form of drug or substance. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"poster-img\" src=\"https:\/\/content.api.news\/v3\/images\/bin\/8367a1c875791b040824302b167aa2ba\" data-sctrack=\"op-poster-img\" alt=\"Fan video appears to show Elijah Hollands struggling before game\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Wright directly addressed rumours that Collingwood have told AFL officials that Hollands told them he had been drinking before the game. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard that report,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t heard anything from Collingwood or the AFL.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Football journalist Damian Barrett responded to the press conference by saying it is a \u201cdisturbing outcome\u201d that the club did not do anything.<\/p>\n<p>Hollands showed clear signs of erratic behaviour during the club\u2019s loss to Collingwood at the MCG on Thursday night. <\/p>\n<p>Many football commentators were left fearing for Hollands\u2019 wellbeing after watching his unusual behaviour. He did not record a disposal, despite playing 60 per cent of game time.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/sport\/afl\/alarming-afl-legends-ask-same-question-over-disturbing-pregame-footage\/news-story\/15096706e5a8b2a90557b26334af153e\" title=\"www.news.com.au\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"15096706e5a8b2a90557b26334af153e\" data-tgev-label=\"sport\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Concerning footage of Hollands before the game even started <\/a>also swirled across cyberspace on Friday. <\/p>\n<p>Wright spoke to reporters at IKON Park on Sunday after the club released a statement. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Carlton Football Club remains in close consultation with the AFL and AFLPA, as it continues to look into the circumstances that occurred on Thursday night in relation to Elijah Hollands,\u201d the club said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Club will continue its process in obtaining a thorough account of the events that occurred on Thursday night, and from there, continue its consultation with the AFL and AFLPA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael Voss made the only public statement about Hollands\u2019 condition after the game when the Blues coach said Hollands was \u201cshattered\u201d and felt he \u201clet people down\u201d following the five-point loss.<\/p>\n<p>Carlton eventually issued a club statement on Friday night, saying Hollands had \u201csuffered a mental health episode\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"poster-img\" src=\"https:\/\/content.api.news\/v3\/images\/bin\/81bf8bce42f1630d2c130ec9e996728a\" data-sctrack=\"op-poster-img\" alt=\"Disturbing footage of Elijah Hollands sparks concern\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It comes after veteran journalist Caroline Wilson reported Collingwood players informed AFL officials that Hollands told them he had been drinking before the game. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSam Edmund said yesterday drugs were not involved. I am not sure where he got that information but I certainly can\u2019t confirm that.
